The top 5 em of sediment was sampled using a box eore at 120 loeations along the Duteh eoast between 1998 and 2003. Over this period, 106 loeations were sampled twiee with an interval of three years. The loeations eovered the main open North Sea waters, the Wadden Sea, the Eastern Seheldt and estuarine areas sueh as the Western Seheldt and Ems-Dollard (see Figure 1). TBT was also analysed in sediment from a number of harbour loeations from 1999 to 2002 (Table 1). 

Should the data concerning carbamazepine be of more general validity, estuarine areas, and even more the deltas because of their shallower water, could be important locations for the photochemical transformation of pollutants transported by river water. There is tremendous geographic variability in the spatial orientation and connections of salt marshes within estuaries and of estuaries with adjacent uplands and the ocean (Fig. 22.1). This paper focuses on the salt marsh ecosystem and associated tidal creeks and not the larger estuarine ecosystem, which may include deeper and extensive bays and sounds. However, it should be recognized that some marshes, especially those that do not have freshwater inputs from rivers, have no true open estuarine area and directly exchange with the ocean. Salt marshes are linked to adjacent terrestrial environments through water and material inputs from rivers, groundwater and precipitation. Martinez-Aguirre et al. (1994) have performed an extensive study of the presence of natural radioactivity around a phosphate fertilizer factory complex situated in an estuarine area of southwest Spain. The study has concluded that the wastes from such industries are the cause of the enhancement of natural radioactivity in the immediate environment. Thus, significantly high levels of U and Th-isotopes and Ra are detected in water and sediment samples collected in this area. These conclusions, based on the enhanced isotopic concentrations, are further supported by the measured U, Th and Ra isotopic activity ratios being quite different from any observed elsewhere in undisturbed estuaries. These isotope activity ratios appear to be very sensitive indicators of waste disposal practices in such environments. 

The Office of Water is responsible for the Agency s water quality activities including development of national programs, technical policies, and regulations relating to drinking water, water quality, groundwater, pollution source standards, and the protection of wetlands, marine, and estuarine areas. 

Important for understanding factors controlling the biogeochemical cycle of PCBs In the environment more specifically aquatic ecosystems Including estuaries. Our data have demonstrated this for the case of a severely polluted coastal estuarine area, both for the data discussed herein and for pore water, sediment and water column data presented and discussed elsewhere (10, 30). 

Most of the estuarine conditions discussed above have been derived through study of radionuclides in the estuary at Ravenglass. However, because of the attention given to this estuarine area regarding radionuclide behaviour in an intertidal environment it is appropriate to provide more details of such research here.

These results illustrate how quantitative data on source specific organic contaminants and their spatial distribution can be used to trace individual riverine contributions to the pollution of coastal areas. This approach might be especially useful to differentiate the contribution of several rivers discharging close together into the marine environment. Nevertheless, these results are limited due to the restricted number of samples. Hence, more comprehensive analyses on numerous coastal and estuarine areas have to be done further on to support this approach. 

Several of the sensors mentioned above were evaluated by the U.S. Coast Guard [White and Arecchi (84)] for use in local area pollution surveillance systems in various ports and estuarine areas. They were tested for their ability to give early alerts to spills, which would permit prompt containment and cleanup efforts and thereby minimize...
