Erosion tests ASTM

The slope erosion test (ASTM D6459) is conducted on one bare soil control and three replicate RECP-protected soil 3 1 slopes. Rainfall is simulated at target intensities of 2, 4, and 6 inTh, which are applied in sequence for 20 min each. Runoff from each slope is collected and soil loss is measured. From these data, an appropriate C-factor for use in the Revised Universal Loss Equation can be calculated by comparing the RECP-protected soil loss with the soil loss of the bare soil control.

ASTM G 73, Practice for Liquid Impingement Erosion Testing—The behavior of solid specimens that are exposed to discrete impacts of liquid may be evaluated by conducting studies according to this standard. Specimens are subjected to hquid sprays or jets and the weight loss (or other metal loss data) is recorded with exposure time. This method presents test apparatus, test specimens, test procedures, and calculations and analysis of erosion resistance. 

ASTM G 32, Method for Vibratory Cavitation Erosion Test— This standard presents a test method for determining the susceptibility of an alloy in an electrolyte to cavitation damage using high-frequency vibration. In general, the rate of erosion is determined by weight loss of the specimen. The method contains terminology definitions, a description of the apparatus, test specimen dimensions and preparation, test conditions, test procedures, interpretation of residts, and report considerations.

Erosion corrosion resistance is measured by immersion testing and impinging an electrolyte flow onto the metal of interest. ASTM G 73 provides standardized methods for performing erosion tests. See Ref 14 for a detailed discussion about various erosion tests. Table 6 provides standard tests for evaluating erosion corrosion.

The ASTM droplet erosion test involves putting specimens on the tip of a propeller that can achieve hypersonic tip velocities and the propeller is exposed to a rain field of controlled water droplets (Figure 10). Plastic materials are used for windshields and radomes on aircraft. Needless to say, it is necessary for the plastics used for these applications to have resistance to damage fiom high-velocity water droplets, fo fact, many plastics are readily destroyed by mach 2 water plets. There are cavitation erosion tests (21,22) that can be used to assess the resistance of plastics to this form of wear, but there are few laboratories performing these tests and fewer use plastics as test specimens. The original ASTM cavitation erosion test required affixing the test specimen on the end of an ultrasonic horn. This would not work well on plastics. The second generation test used a stationary specimen placed near the tip of a vibrating ultrasonic horn. This test could be used on plastics. The latest test uses a high- pressure water jet to create a cavitation field.

Testing. The measurement of corrosion, wear, and corrosion-wear interactions as well as erosion-corrosion interactions is a multistep process. Each component of the interaction must be measured separately. The results may then be combined to identify the synergistic effects and create a complete picture of the damage process. Measurement of the interaction between corrosion and wear modes or damage is more difficult. The standard (ASTM, G119)4 applies to systems in liquid solutions or slurries and some aspects of it can be adapted to dry corrosion and wear interactions as well. (Tylczak and Adler)5...

This chapter refers to many ASTM standards, most of which are in Volume 3.02 of the ASTM Annual Book of Standards entitled Wear and Erosion Metal Corrosion .
