Erosion prevention

Since the publication of these articles no major breakthroughs in erosion, or rather erosion prevention, have been made. However, several patents claiming methods and means of minimizing gun barrel erosion have appeared recently. These are abstracted below ... 

The application of containment—the presumptive remedy—often requires the design and installation of a landfill cover. Other common components, such as landfill gas management, groundwater treatment or containment, and collection and disposal of leachate, may also be required. Landfill covers may offer several environmental benefits (minimize erosion, prevent occurrence of disease vectors and other nuisances, and meet aesthetic and other end-use purposes), but they are based on three primary goals.1415...

In arid and semiarid regions, water restricts the production and decay of biomass. Consequently, the turnover of SOM is low but erosion prevents SOM accumulation in these regions. In boreal regions cold winters and hot and dry summers restrict biomass production and decay. Production of biomass is slow but decay is even slower and hence slow accumulation of SOM occurs in upper soil horizons. Radiation directly affects the decay of biomass, forming oxygen radicals from water. This mechanism has been found to be an important factor in the oxidation of DOM in northern peatlands (Bertilsson ef a/., 1999). 

The factors influencing water erosion, according to McCalla and Army (1961), are chiefly intensity, amount and duration of rainfall amount and velocity of surface flow nature of the soil and its cover and slope of the land. Organic matter in the form of residues on the surface are more effective in erosion prevention than are buried residues, or thoroughly decomposed organic matter that is a part of the soil mass. 

Slit-film also finds its way into many other applications. These include twine, woven fabrics for feed and fertilizer sacks, sand bags and bulk container bags, tarpaulins, mats, screens for erosion prevention, and geotextiles to stabilize soil beds. Fibrillated slit-film is used as a face yarn in outdoor carpets and mats.

One technique to prevent the breach of sand protection dykes is to reinforce them internally using a geotextile tube core, as shown in Fig. 20.30. Here, the geotextile tube prevents the breach of the protection dyke stmcture even if the sand cover is eroded from the exposed side of the protection dyke during storms. After the storm the eroded sand is replaced and the geotextile tube is covered again. Protection dykes internally reinforced with geotextile tubes have been shown to be effective erosion prevention stmctures.
