Elastomer-epoxies

Effect of Molecular Configuration of Elastomer. The extent of the impact and strength improvements of ERL-4221 depends on the chemical structure and composition of the elastomer modifier. The data shown in Table I indicate that the carboxyl terminated 80-20 butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer (CTBN) is the most effective toughening and reinforcing agent. The mercaptan terminated copolymer (MTBN) is considerably less effective as far as tensile strength and heat distortion temperature are concerned. The mercaptan groups are considerably less reactive with epoxides than carboxyls (4), and this difference in the rate of reaction may influence the extent of the epoxy-elastomer copolymerization and therefore the precipitation of the rubber as distinct particles. [Pg.555]

A number of workers have treated non-Gaussian networks theoretically in terms of this finite extensibility problem. The surprising conclusion is that the effect on simple statistical theory is not as severe as might be expected. Even for chains as short as 5 statistical random links at strains of up to 0.25, the equilibrium rubbery modulus is increased by no more than 20-30 percent (typical epoxy elastomers rupture at much lower strains). Indeed, hterature reports of highly crosslinked epoxy M, calculated from equilibrium rubbery moduh are consistently reasonable, apparently confirming this mild finite extmsibiUty effect. [Pg.120]

Adhesives recommended include acrylics, polyesters, epoxies, elastomers, and pressure-sensitive adhesives. [Pg.149]

The difficulty in preparing aligned and exfoliated montmorillonite composites in epoxy was again apparent. This complication was further compromised with the preferred association at the epoxy-elastomer interface of the intercalated organomontmorillonite bundles. The result was a greater randomization of the montmorillonite dispersed phase in the epoxy. [Pg.86]

Tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol is used in elastomer production. As a solvent for the polymerization initiator, it finds appHcation in the manufacture of chlorohydrin mbber. Additionally, tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol is used as a catalyst solvent-activator and reactive diluent in epoxy formulations for a variety of apphcations. Where exceptional moisture resistance is needed, as for outdoor appHcations, furfuryl alcohol is used jointly with tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol in epoxy adhesive formulations. [Pg.83]

Nickel dialkyldithiocarbamates stabili2e vulcani2ates of epichlorhydrinethylene oxide against heat aging (178). Nickel dibutyldithiocarbamate [56377-13-0] is used as an oxidation inhibitor in synthetic elastomers. Nickel chelates of substituted acetylacetonates are flame retardants for epoxy resins (179). Nickel dicycloalkyldithiophosphinates have been proposed as flame-retardant additives for polystyrene (180—182) (see Flame retardants Heat stabilizers). [Pg.15]

Alkylated and alkenated toluenediamines are used as antioxidants (qv) in oils and elastomers (10,53,63—65), as chemical intermediates for polyamides, polyimides, and polyesterimides (53,1) and as epoxy curatives (53,58,66) (see Epoxy resins). [Pg.239]

Sulfonic acid salts have found widespread use in the area of corrosion inhibition. Lubrizol Corporation produces a wide variety of sulfonic acids, particularly in the form of magnesium salts, for use in lubricant formulations, anticorrosion coatings, greases, and resins (146,147). Petroleum sulfonates are used in epoxy resin elastomers to improve anticorrosion properties of coatings and sealants (qv) (148,149). [Pg.103]

Synthetic resins, such as phenoHc and cresyUc resins (see Phenolic resins), are the most commonly used friction material binders, and are usually modified with drying oils, elastomer, cardanol [37330-39-5] an epoxy, phosphoms- or boron-based compounds, or even combinations of two. They ate prepared by the addition of the appropriate phenol and formaldehyde [50-00-0] in the presence of an acidic or basic catalyst. Polymerization takes place at elevated temperatures. Other resin systems are based on elastomers (see Elastomers, synthetic), drying oils, or combinations of the above or other polymers. [Pg.274]

To achieve low stress embedding material, low modulus material such as siUcones (elastomers or gels) and polyurethanes are usually used. Soft-domain elastomeric particles are usually incorporated into the hard (high modulus) materials such as epoxies and polyimides to reduce the stress of embedding materials. With the addition of the perfect particle size, distribution, and loading of soft domain particles, low stress epoxy mol ding compounds have been developed as excellent embedding materials for electronic appHcations. [Pg.192]

There have been other approaches to obtaining rubber/metal adhesion besides primers or additives consisting of phenolics or epoxies plus halogenated elastomers. For example, carboxylated polymers (olefins and diolefins copolymerized with acrylic acid monomers) have shown excellent adhesion to metals. Very little carboxyl is necessary, and polymers with carboxyl contents as low as 0.1% show good adhesion when laminated to bare steel. When these materials possess... [Pg.453]

Elastomers, plastics, fabrics, wood and metals can be joined with themselves and with each other using nitrile rubber/epoxy resin blends cured with amines and/or acidic agents. Ethylene-propylene vulcanizates can also be joined using blends of carboxylated nitrile rubber, epoxy resin and a reactive metal filler (copper, nickel, cobalt). However, one of the largest areas of use of nitrile rubber modified epoxy systems is in the printed circuit board area [12]. [Pg.660]
