All members receive a newsletter highlighting environmental topics and SETAC activities, and reduced fees for the Annual Meeting and SETAC special publications. All members except Students and Senior Active Members receive monthly issues of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry ET Q and Integrated Environmental Assessment and Management (lEAM), peer-reviewed journals of the Society. Student and Senior Active Members may subscribe to the journal. Members may hold office and, with the Emeritus Members, constitute the voting membership. 

The recycling of PET is an important environmental topic as well as a commercial opportunity due to its widespread use, abundance and availability in bottles, packaging and fibres. While mechanical recycling of PET is now well established, newer chemical recycling techniques rely on depolymerization routes which cleave the polymer chains into new monomer building blocks (see Chapter 16).

Environmental issues are a current topic that strongly motivates many students and that gets much attention in the news. Several new experiments were devoted to environmental topics. We have already mentioned a laser lab devoted to the study of the kinetics of ozone formation (26). Other new experiments studied the thermochemistry of biodiesel (135), the use of spectroscopy to estimate the average temperature of the earth s atmosphere... 

For those more inclined to use environmental topics to enrich thermodynamics and kinetics parts of the physical chemistry curriculum, Modeling Stratospheric Ozone Chemistry and the Contrail projects are two examples. 

Environmental Chemistry is a relatively young science. Interest in this subject, however, is growing very rapidly and, although no agreement has been reached as yet about the exact content and limits of this interdisciplinary discipline, there appears to be increasing interest in seeing environmental topics which are based on chemistry embodied in this subject. One of the first objectives of Environmental Chemistry must be the study of the environment and of natural chemical processes which occur in the environment. A major purpose of this series on Environmental Chemistry, therefore, is to present a reasonably uniform view of various aspects of the chemistry of the environment and chemical reactions occurring in the environment. 

Identify Reactions to and Effective Messages About Uncertainty. Some relevant topics (such as trust) will continue to be the subject of considerable research outside the biomonitoring field and might in turn be applicable to biomonitoring efforts without much adaptation or supplementation. That is unlikely to be true of the perception of and communication about uncertainty, which despite its centrality to environmental-health issues generally has attracted little researcher attention in the last few decades. Furthermore, only some aspects of biomonitoring-relevant uncertainty are shared with other health or environmental topics. If biomonitoring sponsors do not fund this critical research, it is unlikely to be sponsored by others.
