Electrolux is the world s largest producer of powered appliances for kitchen, cleaning and outdoors. They have created comprehensive Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for many of their product lines. Information within the product profiles details chemicals that have been banned as well as the percentage and types of materials and how they have improved material choices. Forexample, plastic components do not contain cadmium, lead, mercury or their compounds or chlorinated or brominated flame retardants metal components are not coated with cadmium, chromium, or nickel and metal paints do not contain pigments and additives based on heavy metals. Many Electrolux products are also PVC-free. [Pg.14]

Environmental product declarations based on the use of environmental management systems provide frameworks for companies (especially SME) to improve their environmental performance [225]. Standardised schemes such as EMAS [226] and ISO 14001 communicate best practice to companies through the supply chain [227]. In particular, eco-labelling by regulators or NGO requires a firm to demonstrate that environmental burdens have been minimised through the entire lifecycle of a product. An eco-label will not be awarded if a product contains certain hazardous chemicals and, in some cases, if certain substances have been used during production39 [228]. [Pg.54]

Type III (ISO/TR 14025) is quantified environmental information [7] on a product life cycle, based on an independently verified LCA stndy and administrated by a programme operator (e.g., the International Environmental Product Declaration (EPD ) System [8]. [Pg.493]

IPP thinking has been embraced by a number of manufacturers in the automotive sector (Figure 10.3). Examples of this include providing consumers with environmental information about their products by an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). There are recognised schemes for certifying this data in Sweden, Japan, South Korea, Norway and Canada for example, with Sweden and Japan leading the way. Core information is based on Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) and by compliance with ISO 14025 [4] and standardisation allows direct product comparision. [Pg.140]

Environmental product declaration is another type of ecolabeling where a number of environmental parameters are declared, but without being evaluated. The primary target group is large purchasers within industry and government. The need for enviroiunental product declarations has increased with the introduction of EMS, which require enviromnental information from suppliers and contractors. See Table F-4. [Pg.297]

Type II Self-Declaration Claims These are environmental claims of products declared by their manufacturers, importers and distributors. There are no accepted criteria that need to be verified independentiy, so this is the least informative type of label. [Pg.137]

Risk managers are confronted with a host of fairly complex technical, legal, and social issues when making decisions about whether to restrict people s exposure to consumer products, drugs, food ingredients, and environmental chemicals, and about the degree of restriction that is necessary. When all of this complex analysis is done, however, the manager needs to be able to face the public and declare that the final decision will ensure that their health will be protected. The... [Pg.304]

No wonder the Communists paid attention when young Trofim Lysenko declared that the genetics of Mendel s peas and Morgan s fruit flies was incorrect and simply a capitalist plot to exploit the peasants and working class. Lysenko believed that environmental factors determined the performance of plants and that acquired characteristics could be inherited. Having unmasked the evil Western myth of gene-based inheritance, Lysenko promised almost instant improvements in agricultural production. [Pg.44]

The objective of this act is to declare a national policy which will encourage productive and enjoyable harmony between man and his environment to promote efforts which will prevent or eliminate damage to the environment and biosphere and stimulate the health and welfare of man to enrich the understanding of the ecological systems and natural resources important to the Nation and to establish a Council on Environmental Quality. Standards Australia [23] has established AS/NZS ISO 14021 2000, Environmental Labels and Declarations - Self-Declared Environmental Claims (type II environmental labelling). This Standard is an adoption with national modifications of ISO 14021 1999 and it specifies requirements applying to the development of environmental claims, expressed in either words or symbols, about products and services. The objective of the standard is to harmonise the various national guidelines on environmental claims used on product labels and in marketing generally, in order to facilitate trade in the global marketplace and to improve consumer confidence in environmental claims. [Pg.282]

A third reason for predicting very low emissions of formaldehyde from phenolic panels is that the cured resin is extremely stable and does not break down to release additional formaldehyde, even under extremely harsh environmental conditions ( ). The high resistance of phenolic resins to deterioration under severe service conditions is, of course, a principal reason they are used so widely in making exterior types of wood panel products. Because of their chemical stability the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has declared that phenol formaldehyde resins represent a consumptive use of formaldehyde, meaning that formaldehyde is irreversibly consumed in its reaction with phenol so that the formaldehyde loses its chemical identity (3). [Pg.27]
