Poverty extreme

In 2007 about 2.66 billion people lived at or just above the breadline ( 2 per day) and about 0.92 billion people in extreme poverty (< 1 per day). The number of consumers with an annual income greater than 10,294 (this level is considered the poverty threshold in Western Europe) constituted 1.76 billion people in 2006. 

When I went into general practice as a country doctor in Texas, I was very impressed that some of our Latin American patients, despite their poverty and living conditions, were extremely healthy. One day, I asked one of my patients how he stayed so healthy, and he told me that he chewed peyote buttons... then I became interested in these drugs that could promise physical as well as mental health. 

Among the Millennium Development Goals, Goal 1 is to Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger . It has a target to Halve, between 1990 and 2015, the proportion of people whose income is less than 1 a day . 

For example, assume that we want to know the average income in a neighborhood where most of the people live below the poverty level, but there are two large houses where the occupants are millionaires. The arithmetic mean would average out all the incomes and give the erroneous impression that the neighborhood was middle class. The median would not be affected by the extreme values. 

Older classifications of psychiatric disorder divided diseases into psychoses and neuroses. The term psychosis is still widely used to describe a severe mental illness with the presence of hallucinations, delusions or extreme abnormalities of behaviour including marked overactivity, retardation and catatonia, usually accompanied by a lack of insight. Psychotic disorders therefore include schizophrenia, severe forms of depression and mania. Psychosis may also be due to illicit substances or organic conditions. Clinical features of schizophrenia may be subdivided into positive symptoms, which include hallucinations, delusions and thought disorder and negative symptoms such as apathy, flattening of affect and poverty of speech.

As Coultate, in a sister volume, has pointed out, the ability of the human race to adapt to extremes of climate, poverty, and over-supply of food, although permitting us to survive throughout the surface of the earth, has a disadvantage in so far as the normal cravings for food, for trace-element stimulation of taste buds, etc. can soon be dampened down by such adaptability. Thus, the personal decision to eat what I fancy is insufficient for persons who are going to survive in a healthy lifestyle for the best part of a century.

Ulrich Beck, the most influential European social analyst of the late twentieth century, in his book Risk Society writes that Hazardous industries have been transferred to the low wage countries of the Third World. There is a systematic attraction between extreme poverty and extreme risk... on the international scale it is emphatically true that material misery and blindness to hazards coincide [12]. 

Cholera is an acute watery diarrheal disorder caused by the water-borne, Gram-negative bacterium Vibrio cholerae. It is a disease of antiquity descriptions of epidemics of the disease date to before 500 bc. During epidemics, the infection is spread by large numbers of vibrio that enter water sources from the voluminous liquid stools and contaminate the environment, particularly in areas of extreme poverty where plumbing and modem waste-disposal systems are primitive or nonexistent.
