Aerosol products are designated as Level 1, 2, or 3 by the classification system of NFPA 30B, Code for the Manufacture and Storage of Aerosol Products. Level 1 aerosols are considered the least hazardous and Level 3 the most hazardous. This system is based upon the fire hazard of these products. Other hazards such as the acute and chronic health hazards, as well as the environmental hazards of aerosol products are not addressed by the NFPA 30B classification system. The fire hazard associated with aerosol products is determined by either a 12-pallet aerosol classification test or the chemical heat of combustion of all of the constituents within the aerosol can.

At Home Depot stores, old pallets are backhauled by trucking companies to Advanced Pallet Recyclers (APR) ([73]). APR collects, shreds, and composts the pallets, creating two products—Enviro Mulch 2000 and Root Mulch. These brands are sold in Home Depot stores in bags marked with the environmentally friendly label. 

Corbiere-Nicollier et al. investigate transport pallets made of composites from China reed fiber used as a substitute for glass fiber [43]. The crucial factor of the assessment is the lifetime of the pallets the authors mention the need to optimize the process of fiber extraction in order to obtain a better material stiffness. For conventional pallets, a lifetime of 5 years is assumed. Environmental advantages for the transport pallets reinforced with China reed fiber are found if the pallet s lifetime is greater than 3 years. These advantages result from the substitution of the glass fiber production, from the reduction of polypropylene, and from the reduced weight of the pallet. For end-of-Ufe, incineration is the preferred option. 

Charcoal briquette production is environmentally friendly in another way the largest briquette manufacturer in the United States uses only waste products for its wood supply. Wood shavings, sawdust, and bark from pallet manufacturers, flooring manufactnrers, and Inmber mills are converted from piles of waste into useful briquettes. 

Environmental impact data for some materials of different densities including glass fibers, natural fibers, polymers, and composites are compiled from Refs [26-28] and are listed in Table 7.7. It is dear that the type of the polymer matrix would be the controlling factor for the environmental impact of composites based on either natural fibers or glass fibers. Data from Ref. [26] suggest that pallets made of natural fiber/PP are environmentally superior to similar pallets made from glass fiber/PP. However,... 

Many manufacturers have become environmentally aware, which is reflected in products such as lift trucks with reduced emissions and recyclable plastic and corrugated pallets. 

For natural fibres, the extent to which these can replace fibreglass (which is heavy and energy intensive to produce) determines mainly the net environmental benefits. The advantages according to cradle-to-factory gate analyses were rather limited in one case (-14% for underfloor panel) and very attractive in the other two cases (-45% to -50% for interior side panel and transport pallet).
