Environmental issues ozone depletion

A separate set of processibility issues involves health, safety, and environmental concerns. Ozone-depleting compounds (ODCs), such as trichloroethane and... [Pg.956]

When the compounds were discovered in the 1930s, people could see no drawbacks to using the new wonder compounds . However, CFCs have caused a serious environmental issue - the depletion of the ozone layer in the upper atmosphere. The ozone layer protects the Earth by absorbing harmful UV radiation arriving from the Sun. [Pg.233]

Thus we see that environmental modeling involves solving transient mass-balance equations with appropriate flow patterns and kinetics to predict the concentrations of various species versus time for specific emission patterns. The reaction chemistry and flow patterns of these systems are sufficiently complex that we must use approximate methods and use several models to try to bound the possible range of observed responses. For example, the chemical reactions consist of many homogeneous and catalytic reactions, photoassisted reactions, and adsorption and desorption on surfaces of hquids and sohds. Is global warming real [Minnesotans hope so.] How much of smog and ozone depletion are manmade [There is considerable debate on this issue.]... [Pg.355]

In this paper I will describe some aspects of important environmental problems from the point of view of the chemical reactions that occur in the atmosphere. An overview of the processes involved in stratospheric ozone depletion is given in the papers by Professor Rowland and Professor Anderson, in acid precipitation by Dr. Phillips, and in tropospheric photochemistry by Professor Chameides. It is not practical for me to discuss the details of all of these complicated systems, so I will concentrate on a few issues which are of current interest to me and which I believe touch on some of the key uncertainties in our understanding of the environmental problems. I will also limit my discussion to gas phase reactions, although we know that many liquid phase or heterogeneous reactions are taking place, especially in the troposphere. [Pg.203]

The replacement of chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) propellants with the non-ozone-depleting hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) merit mention for two reasons. First, it illustrates how environmental impact can be an important selection criterion at a time when green issues are high profile. Second, HFCs were developed and evaluated for safety and delivery capability by a consortium of pharmaceutical companies, with costs shared and evaluation programs defined by prior agreement between end-users and propellant manufacturers. Such collaboration could be employed usefully in the future to develop novel excipients for delivery or targeting. The benefits would undoubtedly accrue to all. [Pg.1617]

It is probably true to say that the term environmental chemistry has no precise definition. It means different things to different people. We are not about to offer a new definition. It is clear that environmental chemists are playing their part in the big environmental issues—stratospheric ozone (C) () depletion, global warming and the like. Similarly, the role of environmental chemistry in regional-scale and local problems—for example, the effects of acid rain or contamination of water resources—is well established. This brief discussion illustrates the clear link in our minds between environmental chemistry and human beings. For many people, environmental chemistry is implicitly linked to pollution . We hope this book demonstrates that such a view is limited and shows that environmental chemistry has a much wider scope. [Pg.1]

Selective dehydrochlorination of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) is a very important environmental issue, and the need to replace these detrimental, ozone-depleting compounds by benign hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) and/or hydrofluorocarbons (MFCs) has stimulated intensive work on the subject [172-182]. Palladium has been the most extensively investigated catalytic metal in this reaction, but the moderate selectivity for CH2F2 exhibited by Pd/Si02 (40%) can be significantly increased, up to 95%, with a 20-40 at%. Au addition [180], and, in Pd/C, from 70% to 90% with Au addition [181,182]. [Pg.391]

Annual report a copy of the annual report and the CER were received. As well as presenting the financial statements the annual report contains a business review in which some environmental highlights are reported. These mention certification of several sites to ISO 14001 and the conclusion of a marketing agreement for a low ozone-depleting solvent. There is also a separate section on HS E issues, which includes safety figures, reports on environmental management and describes Elf Atochem s approach to product stewardship. [Pg.223]

The struggle to improve air quality has persisted for many years. Although many cities still have air pollution episodes that are classified as unhealthy, stricter emission controls mean that the air over most major cities is cleaner today than it was in the mid-twentieth century. Even so, issues such as acid rain and ozone depletion continue to pose serious environmental challenges that require cooperation between science and policy, see also Air Pollution. [Pg.102]
