Environmental consideration weathering

The Texas Transportation Institute has just completed a very extensive two year FHWA sponsored program to look into other aspects of safety and environmental impact of sulfur-asphalt construction [53]. A number of typical sulfur-asphalt and sulfur-concrete paving systems were evaluated to assess their potential environmental impact and establish safety considerations relative to their formulation, construction and maintenance. The environmental impact was investigated from the formulation stages, through weathering, and included considerations of simulated fires and chemical spills.

Natural environment and infrastructure monitoring is very important for environmental security. Note that only the infiastructure - the built component of the environment - besides being monitored, can also be controlled and modified by humans. The natural environment can only be monitored, and its status - for example, the weather conditions - taken into consideration in action planning. Natural environment and infrastructure can be consider like a metastable physical system. The decline of the stability of the natural environment (according to his parameters) can be a long process and expensive to the reconditioning. 

Fig. 2 shows the different pathways in which chemical elements contained in rocks are released to the different environmental compartments. Five main processes are responsible for their dispersion into the different ecosystems (1) Weathering, either directly by rain water on rock outcrops, by soil percolation water or by root exsu-dates, which interact with rock fragments, contained in the soil cover (2) Down hill mechanical transport of weathered rock particles, such as creep and erosion and subsequent sedimentation as till material or alluvial river and lake sediments (3) Transport in dissolved or low size colloidal form by surface and groundwater (4) Terrestrial and aquatic plants growing in undisturbed natural situations will take up whatever chemical elements they need and which are available in the surface and shallow groundwater. Trace elements taken up from the soil will accumulate in the leaves and will possibly enrich the soil by litterfall (5) Diffuse atmospheric input by aerosols and rain rock particles from volcanic eruptions, desertic areas (Chester et al., 1996), seaspray and their reaction with rain water. A considerable part of this can be anthropogenic. 

In addition to the simple color-shaded representations, photorealistic model representations may be used for the review and examination of designs. The models are portrayed and used in a reality-fike environment and are supported by key hardware components. This allows for the consideration of various environmental conditions such as type and position of the light source, the observer s position and perspective, weather conditions, and surface characteristics such as texture and reflectivity. Also, animation of the object during design is possible for the review of movement characteristics. Through these visualization methods it is possible to assess a product s design before prototype production begins and aid the preparation of sales brochures and other documents. 

Finally, analysing the anatomy of accidents in the outdoors reveals that certain combinations of environmental factors can lead to dynamic circumstances (see Hale, 1983 Priest, 1996 Thomas and Raymond, 1996). Factors such as the weather, environmental vagaries and seasonal variations are significant considerations for those who work in the outdoor classroom because they create dynamic and sometimes unpredictable hazards for the unwary. Many incidents affecting pupils have occurred by or in the sea and open water environments are particularly susceptible in this respect and are, therefore, potentially very hazardous. Considerable planning needs to be performed to develop a sampling procedure that is representative of the environmental system of interest. First, it is necessary to collect samples from sites that are representative for the study. One should also make certain to collect appropriate types of materials (e.g., atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, pedosphere, lithosphere) to answer the environmental question of interest. A representative number of specimens for each material need to be sampled and subsequently analyzed. Although ideally this value should be calculated based on the known values of the standard deviation of the samples, in many cases the variance is unknown and it is necessary to select the number of samples based on an estimated value. Lastly, it is necessary to account for weather conditions and natural seasonal variations in the concentrations of metal species in biological samples.
