Also, the examples described in this paper were evaluated in different case studies. All the cases described in this chapter also suggest a contribution to a perception of the relevance of chemistry education among the learners and a better awareness of environmental and sustainability issues, as also discussed by Mandler et al. In accordance with the Decree, the MUCTR, as a member of the Moscow Association of Environmental and Sustainable Development Education, provides professional training by giving the course Environmental Protection at Industrial Enterprises. Since 2000, about 3000 representatives from various plants and factories in the Russian capital have received this training. 

Attempts have been and are being made to overcome these problems with lignocellulosic reinforcement also in view of environmental and sustainability aspects. There is a vast scientific literature on this topic (cf. [1-3] for recent reviews) which cannot be reviewed here. By and large, it can be said that lignocellulosic fibers such as bast (e.g., flax, hemp, jute, ramie, kenaf, bamboo), leaf (e.g., sisal, abaca) or wood fibers can be used as reinforcement with advantages over glass reinforcement in price, density (approx. 1.5 g/cm or less), and renewability. We have attempted to prepare various combinations of materials - with two or more distinct catalytic functionahties, and attempted to apply these in the three different situations which are relevant to environmental and sustainable catalysis. 

In each case study, we presented detailed introductions to the specific field explaining why these reactions, catalysts and processes are of interest in environmental and sustainable chemistry and also discussed various changes to the materials and processes made in order to allow both to operate in concert. 

Chapter 1 discloses the environmental applications of multifunctional nanocomposite catalytic materials, the preparation of various combinations of materials with two or more distinct catalytic functionalities and application of these in three different cases which are relevant to environmental and sustainable catalysis viz. (i) coupling NO storage systems with urea hydrolysis and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalysts, (ii) constructing a material that would act as a four-way catalyst, and (iii) studies on the generation of a material to promote selective oxidation of an organic molecule using synthesized in situ from H /O mixtures. This is an example of an attempt to couple two heterogeneously catalyzed reactions (in an atom efficient and clean manner) to replace other reactions that would be considered environmentally troublesome.
