Aim to sound like yourself, a high school senior. 

High school seniors should be allowed open campuses, on which they can arrive In time for their first class, leave during free periods, and come back to school for their other classes. There Is no reason to treat high school seniors like children by making them stay In school all day when they don t have classes to attend all day. Seniors can handle the extra responsibility. 

The Problem The number of boys in a high school senior class is ten less than twice the number of girls. Also, six fewer than half the students in the class have cars. If 202 students own cars, then how many boys are in the class ... 

The University of Wisconsin s Department of ports Medicine found that 30% of high school football players surveyed in that state used or had used creatine, and the use of the supplement tended to increase with age. Simi-larly, a survey of high school and middle school athletes in Westchester County, New York, reported creatine use among 44% of high school seniors surveyed. 

The case was watched closely by authorities, and in response to public outcry over Samantha Reid s death, Congress banned the substance in April 2000. At the same time, President Clinton signed the Hillary J. Farias and Samantha Reid Date Rape Drug Prohibition Act into law. The law also commemorates Farias, a 17-year-old high-school senior from La Porte, Texas, who died from a GHB overdose after someone slipped it into her soda. 

NIDA reports that 13 million to 17 million Americans have used a hallucinogen at least once. In 1999, 8.1% of high school seniors had used LSD in the previous year. One study identified LSD as the third most common drug of abuse among college students, after alcohol and marijuana. 

Abuse of the psilocybin mushroom continued and clinical studies were finding little evidence that psilocybin mushrooms have medical uses. This trend of increasing recreational use of psilocybin was similar to the pattern of drug use in America. In 1962, fewer than 2% of the United States population had tried an illicit drug. By 1979, 65% of high school seniors and 70% of young adults had tried an illicit drug. 

Renewed interest in hallucinogens coincides with a perception of reduced risk and greater peer support for use, the Monitoring the Future (MTF) studies show. In 1991, 90% of high school seniors reported that they disapproved of hallucinogen use even once or twice. That number had dropped to 83% in 1994 and to 80% in 1996. 

Of high school seniors in 2001, almost half reported having used marijuana or hashish at least once. 

Contrary to popular belief, most teenagers do not smoke marijuana. Studies show that in 1996, about 34 percent of tenth graders and 36 percent of high school seniors used marijuana. Although use by high school students increased after a decade of decline, marijuana use by twelve- to seventeen -year-olds dropped in 1996.f "Everyone does it," is a saying that does not apply. 

Middle school and high school students consume about 1.1 billion cans of beer each year, i In one recent month, half of the 2.8 million high school students had had a drink, and in one two-week period, about 30 percent of high school seniors were binge drinkers, having five or more drinks at one sitting. Experts who are concerned about alcohol abuse say it is the number-one drug problem.
