Engineering and Civilization

Engineering affairs did not play basic role only in the development of civilizations but additionally in the economic, social, international, and inter-career affairs. Unfortunately, in our day s internet facilities rendered engineering affairs into more static and traditional appearance as well as into classical forms. It is not frequent that engineering abihties like handy works, eye weariness, mind 

This sentence expresses all the available laws in science. Hence, if two variables are force and acceleration , it implies Newton s second law in physics electric current and voltage implies Ohm s law in electrical engineering heat and temperature difference as Fourier law flux and concentration difference as Pick s law groundwater velocity and hydraulic gradient as Darcy s law in hydrogeology speed and distance of a planet from the earth as Hubble s law in astronomy, etc. 

It is not possible to put a clear cut boundary between philosophy and engineering, because if philosophy is driven away from the engineering aspects, then engineer cannot make rational reasoning to reach a conclusive result for the benefit 

Engineering, whilst it draws knowledge and inspiration from science, mathematics, architecture, art and nature, is neither simply a super nor subset of these disciplines. It has its own distinguishing features. Strangely the discipline with which engineering can best be compared is philosophy or at any rate a modem interpretation of what constitutes philosophy. Adam Morton has stated that [18]  

This puts in a nutshell the very essence that is engineering—to proceed at aU, some assnmptions or approximations have to be made if things are to be designed and bnilt. There is great art in being able to nse gainfully those theories that are known to be imperfect and to judge the extent to which rules of thumb

By definition, the plant engineering function is multidisciplinary. It routinely incorporates the disciplines of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and civil engineering. Other disciplines, such as chemical engineering for example, may also be needed, depending on the type of industry or service involved. 

Why do electronics researchers often plot the data this way One reason is that the slope can be directly interpreted as a resistance. Data used by mechanical engineers and civil engineers are also plotted this way in many cases ("stresses" on the vertical axis, versus "strain rates" on the horizontal). Also, the viscosities of fluids are plotted this way.

From strength of materials one can move two ways. On the one hand, mechanical and civil engineers and applied mathematicians shift towards more elaborate situations, such as plastic shakedown in elaborate roof trusses here some transient plastic deformation is planned for. Other problems involve very complex elastic situations. This kind of continuum mechanics is a huge field with a large literature of its own (an example is the celebrated book by Timoshenko 1934), and it has essentially nothing to do with materials science or engineering because it is not specific to any material or even family of materials. 

It is significant that most of the data from which a remarkable uniformity of attack is deduced are derived from small isolated panels. This is the most convenient form of specimen for measurements of corrosion rates by loss of weight but it eliminates the important effect of galvanic currents passing between remote parts of a large structure. It is believed that the experience of civil engineers and other users would not support the conclusion suggested by panel tests that corrosion is no faster in tropical than in temperate waters.
