Digital logic devices in industry, often referred to as embedded technology, represent an incalculable value, particularly in industrial production and fabrication, where automated processes are now the rule rather than the exception. [Pg.500]

FPGA is another important milestone in embedded technology, which has quite a good presence in specialized SISs (with special reference to nuclear installations) as well as in local controls of sensors and final elements (even in safe PLC in specialized area). Prior to going into details about the system, it is necessary to put forward a few definitions of terms which will be used quite frequently. [Pg.992]

In addition to the traditional embedded technological improvement pattern that aircraft engine and airframe manufacturers are continuously supporting, some further opportunities to further reduce the emissions from aviation may arise. They are related to the design, development, validation and production of sustainable alternative fuels. This new avenue must be further explored to identify the... [Pg.382]

Core Competencies. These are sets of skills and capabiUties that are difficult to dupHcate and have the potential to create entirely new businesses. Technical competencies often refer to sets of key technologies and the kinds of learning embedded in the organization and its people, the competency carriers. [Pg.128]

Possible applications of MIP membranes are in the field of sensor systems and separation technology. With respect to MIP membrane-based sensors, selective ligand binding to the membrane or selective permeation through the membrane can be used for the generation of a specific signal. Practical chiral separation by MIP membranes still faces reproducibility problems in the preparation methods, as well as mass transfer limitations inside the membrane. To overcome mass transfer limitations, MIP nanoparticles embedded in liquid membranes could be an alternative approach to develop chiral membrane separation by molecular imprinting [44]. [Pg.136]

Kymissis et al. have examined the possibility of generation of electrical power parasitically from devices built in a shoe, a wearable subsystem for the soldier. Merits of three different types of piezoelectric devices are compared. They are a unimorph strip piezoceramic composite, a stave of multilayer laminate of PVDF foil, and a shoe-mounted rotary magnetic generator as a part of technology demonstration a piezoelectric embedded shoe has also been postulated to periodically broadcast a digital radio frequency identification (RFID) signal as the wearer walks. [Pg.291]

The Bayesian network technology embedded in the ARBITER tool is also well suited for learning both probability relationships (e.g., method reliability estimates) and the essential structure of cause and effect, from data sets where predictions and outcomes can be compared. Colleagues have already applied this capability on a large scale for risk management (selection of potentially suspect claims for further inspection and examination) in the insurance industry. [Pg.271]

Thanks to advances in miniaturization and developments in sensors and measurement technologies, it is already possible to collect a considerable amount of health-related information from wearable or embedded devices, and numerous new devices are also in the pipeline (Table 32.1). Some of these devices function on a constant basis, whereas others take intermittent mea-... [Pg.764]

Center for Healthcare Technologies at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, potentially capable to measure pH at or near the stroke site29. The probe is the distal end of a 125 pm fibre tapered up to a diameter of 50 pm. A fluorescent pH-indicator, seminaphthorhodamine-1-carboxylate, is embedded inside a silica sol-gel matrix which is fixed to the fibre tip. Excitation of the dye takes place at 533 nm and the emission in correspondence of the acid (580 nm) and basic (640 nm) bands are separately detected. The use of this ratiometric technique obviates worrying about source fluctuations, which have the same effects on the two detected signals. The pH sensor developed was first characterised in the laboratory, where it showed fast response time (of the order of tens of seconds) and an accuracy of 0.05 pH units, well below the limit of detection necessary for this clinical application (0.1 pH units). The pH sensor was also tested in vivo on rats, by placing the pH sensor in the brain of a Spraque-Dawley rat at a depth of approximately 5 mm30. [Pg.425]
