Frequendy, and especially when developing new analytical flow methods, not all required components are commercially available. A possible solution would be finding a mechanical and electronic workshop that builds for us our previously designed devices. However, very often when dealing with prototype designs, the production step becomes slow, tedious, and very expensive. Trial and error cycles are very common until the final version fulfilling all the required parameters of the new product is reached. 

The electronic workshop requires little, basic, very common and cheap instmmentation. Main elements are soldering iron, multimeter, oscilloscope, adjustable voltage supply, and function generator. 

Without the unlimited support firom the workshops this work would simply not have been possible. Thanks to the mechanical workshop for your help at any material, often within hours and equally the electronic workshop for solving electrical problems and reanimating many devices. In this context I also want to acknowledge the team of the chair Michael Eckinger, Wemer Tauchmann, and Dani Reicheneder for their help. 

It is proposed to illuminate an electronic workshop of dimensions 9 X 8 X 3m to an illuminance of 550 lx at the bench level. The specification calls for luminaires having one 1500mm 65 W natural tube with an initial output of 3700 lumens (see Table 3.2). Determine the number of luminaires required for this installation when the UF and LLF are 0.9 and 0.8, respectively. 

UV-spectra were measured with a Perkin-Elmer Lambda 5 spectrophotometer and NMR-spectra with a Bruker WN-250 spectrometer. Macroscale electrolyses were performed in a U-shaped cell with a stirred mercury pool under N2- The potential was controlled by a Jaissle potentiostat. Model 5000T-B, and the progress of the reaction followed by a coulometer developed and built by the electronic workshop of the University of Konstanz. A silver/silver chloride electrode (SSE) was used as a reference.

Electric tube furnaces of appropriate dimensions are available from various manufacturers. A model RO 4/25 by Heraeus GmbH, Hanau, FRG is suitable. However, a very satisfactory furnace can be built by any well equipped laboratory workshop at little cost and effort. The material required consists of thin walled ceramic tubing, 3.5 cm i.d., nichrome resistance wire, heat resistant insulation, and ordinary hardware material. A technical drawing will be provided by the submitters upon request. The temperature of the furnace can be adjusted by an electronic temperature controller using a thermocouple sensor. A 1.5 kW-Variac transformer and any high temperature thermometer would do as well for the budget-minded chemist.
