Electrical connections effectiveness

If the positive potential changes are very small and confined to a few points on a small unprotected structure, it may be practicable to reduce the potential at these points by installing reactive anodes. The anodes will probably be most effective if they can be buried between the two structures. In some circumstances a similar screen of zinc, aluminium or steel may be installed between the structures. The screen must be electrically connected to the unprotected structure since it is installed with the object of providing an electrolytic path to earth for the interaction current. [Pg.239]

The discovery of nanotubes and other nanostructures has opened up an exciting new field of research. But just what other shapes are possible and what other materials will form nanotubes To find out, we will need to predict the effect of different configurations. There are also many experimental problems to be solved. For example, how would you form an electrical connection to a nanotube Methods for synthesizing the large amounts of nanotubes needed in large-scale applications of nanotube assemblies also need to be developed. [Pg.728]

Now let us consider a model for a SC device that comprises two electrodes (anode and cathode), each of them being electrically connected to a current collector fabricated of A1 foil. Let two of such collectors have a certain thickness of SAi- As an electrode material, an activated carbon powder is considered below. Anode and cathode are interposed with a separator of thickness Ss. The electrodes and separator are impregnated with electrolyte. In this paper we mostly focus on the optimization of SC performance by varying the electrode thickness, while some other effects will briefly be considered in the next section. [Pg.76]

Ion-Selective Field Effect Transistors [22b,c,d] An ion-selective field effect transistor (ISFET) is a hybrid of an ion-selective electrode and a metal-oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET), the metal gate of the MOSFET being replaced by or contacted with a thin film of a solid or liquid ion-sensitive material. The ISFET and a reference electrode are immersed in the solution containing ion i, to which the ISFET is sensitive, and electrically connected as in Fig. 5.37. A potential which varies with the activity of ion i, o(i), as in Eq. (5.38), is developed at the ion-sensitive film ... [Pg.152]

In order to study cathode flooding in small fuel cells for portable applications operated at ambient conditions, Tuber et al.81 designed a transparent cell that was only operated at low current densities and at room temperature. The experimental data was then used to confirm a mathematical model of a similar cell. Fig. 4 describes the schematic top and side view of this transparent fuel cell. The setup was placed between a base and a transparent cover plate. While the anodic base plate was fabricated of stainless steel, the cover plate was made up of plexiglass. A rib of stainless steel was inserted into a slot in the cover plate to obtain the necessary electrical connection. It was observed that clogging of flow channels by liquid water was a major cause for low cell performance. When the fuel cell operated at room temperature during startup and outdoor operation, a hydrophilic carbon paper turned out to be more effective compared with a hydrophobic one.81... [Pg.143]

In a bipolar arrangement, the sacrificial electrodes are placed between the two parallel electrodes without any electrical connection. The two monopolar electrodes are connected to the electric power source with no interconnections between the sacrificial electrodes. This cell arrangement provides a simple setup, which facilitates easy maintenance. When an electric current is passed through the two electrodes, the neutral sides of the conductive plate will be transformed to charged sides, which have opposite charge compared with the parallel side beside it. The sacrificial electrodes are known as bipolar electrodes. It has been reported that EC cell with monopolar electrodes in series connection was more effective where aluminum electrodes were used as sacrificial and iron was used as anode and cathode. And, electrocoagulation with Fe/Al (anode/cathode) was more effective for the treatment process than Fe/Fe electrode pair (Modirshahla et al. 2007). [Pg.248]

In fact, thermal equilibrium is not attained in the vapor phase osmometer, and the foregoing equations do not apply as written since they are predicated on the existence of thermodynamic equilibrium. Perturbations are experienced from heat conduction from the drops to the vapor and along the electrical connections. Diffusion controlled processes may also occur within the drops, and the magnitude of these effects may depend on drop sizes, solute diffusivity, and the presence of volatile impurities in the solvent or solute. The vapor phase osmometer is not a closed system and equilibrium cannot therefore be reached. The system can be operated in the steady state, however, and under those circumstances an analog of expression (3-6) is... [Pg.78]

The CE-ICP-MS interface based on the sheath-flow (make-up buffer) and pneumatic concentric nebulizers described by Lu et al. is the most widely used CE-ICP-MS interface, and it has also been applied to electrospray MS interfaces. The sheath-flow or make-up buffer acts to complete electrical connection to the exit end of the electrophoretic capillary grounding is achieved by having a metal tube or metal tee near the connection to the nebulizer (Fig. 3) or by coating the capillary with silver (Fig. 4). The second function of the sheath flow is to compensate for the suction effect. Low pressure created near the tip of the pneumatic nebulizer by the flow gas of the operating nebulizer can induce laminar flow through... [Pg.278]
