Electric vehicles standard tests

The end of fife, as typically defined for electric-vehicle batteries, is a 20% loss of capacity on a standard simulated vehicle driving profile. A commonly used profile is the simplified federal urban driving schedule (SFUDS). Bipolar 13-cm diameter Li-Al/FeS2 cells obtained over 300 eycles on a modified version of the SFUDS, denoted the Dynamic Stress Test (DST). Both the FeS and U.P. FeS2 chemistries have demonstrated the ability to achieve more than 1000 cycles in fiooded-electrolyte prismatic cells when discharged at constant current." As is tme for other high-temperature batteries, cycle life is not likely to be strongly influenced by cycle type. 

This gives the battery a 100-mile range under standard electric vehicle test profiles. The battery has a cyclic life of 120 cycles. 

Abuse tests for smaU consumer cells are defined by the hitemational Electrotechnical Committee (lEC), Underwriter s Laboratories (UL), and the Japan Storage Battery Association (SBA). For electric vehicle batteries, the USABC has developed a test manual that is available from Sr E [39]. The USABC manual classifies abuse tests as mechanical, thermal, electrical, and vibration. In Europe, ASTOR is developing standards for advanced automotive batteries [40]. There have been only a few reports on the abuse behavior of large cells.

The rear axle is loaded to a standard weight similar to the weight used in the Benkelman beam test. The maximum deflection is recorded by electrical transducers located near the beam pivots. When measurements are taken, the beam assembly is pulled forward at approximately twice the speed of the vehicle, to a new position ready for the next measurement. The working speed of the deflectograph is approximately 2 km/h (walking speed) and measurements are taken every 3.8 to 4.0 m. A deflectograph vehicle is shown Figure 16.50.

Standard cell qualification tests include functional checkout (operational electrical test, life cycle tests), environmental tests (i.e. vibration, thermal shocks, thermal vacuum, radiation) or others as deemed appropriate for the specific hardware and application such as abuse and safety testing. Recommended test items of the component cell qualification for space vehicles are specified in ISO WD17546 ... 

General requirements and tests of lead starter batteries and the details of electrical and mechanical examinations which are to be carried out for motor vehicle starter batteries are described in DIN EN 60 095-1 1993. It eminated from the international standard IEC95-1 1988 and is valid in the EU and associated countries. 

The attempts to standardize the testing methods have led to the development of specialized standards for building materials, transportation and storage materials, electrical engineering, furniture and furnishings, etc. Other tests have been proposed for textiles, foams, road vehicles, streetcars, railways, aircraft, mining, and home furnishings.
