Elastomer seals

The O-ring - is the most widely available and inexpensive elastomer seal in the world. Practieally all rubber eompounds are available in an o-ring configuration. You can buy them from specialty houses or from the corner hardware store. 

The hydrocarbons selected were heptane, cyclohexane, and toluene one such mixture is now specified within the fluids for liquid aging assessments according to Norwegian NORSOK M-710 Rev. 2 standard for qualification of offshore duty elastomer seals. 

Some elastomer sealings that are in contact with the antifreeze mixture may not be stable in such a medium because of consequences such as swelling. The compatibility of ethylene-glycol with certain plastics is shown in Table 14-3.

These effects are important when considering the design of tritium systems. Damage to components, such as gaskets, valve tips, and 0-rings, must be carefully considered. Component failure during service can cause a major release of tritium. Because elastomer seals often become embrittled, maintenance on nearby sections of piping may cause seals to develop leaks as the result of mechanical movement in the seal area.

A circular elastomer seal attached to the horizontal plate is normally in contact with the inner diameter of the surrounding penetration to restrict flow into or out of the upper region of the ONCA. Lifting the ONCA for removal retracts the elastomer seal to a smaller diameter to prevent damage during vertical movements of the ONCA.

Door seals have typically been made of rubber materials with metal inserts. The metal inserts allow the rnbber part to snap-fit onto the frame. There have been efforts to develop a thermoplastic elastomer seal that would be relatively easy to recycle and would meet the same performance requirements. These can also be molded in different densities or fitted over compatible plastics to eliminate the need the metal inserts. A good example is Ihe Mitsubishi Motors Mini-Cab (in Japan), which is a SUV-like commercial vehicle with a large rear cargo door. The rubber seal for the door was replaced with a TPE seal with the new part weighing 30% less [3].

Siemens tested on-board power supply for submarines with a 100 kW alkahne fuel cell on the U1 submarine of the German Navy in 1988. TTie 6 month test runs were very successful and constituted the basis of the German Navy s decision to equip the new 212 generation of submarines with fuel cells. However, the more recent PEFC development was used. The fuel ceU developed by Siemens is based on a Nation membrane with a high platinum loading and a metalhc bipolar plate with an elastomer seal, ah developed specificaUy for the utihzation of H2/O2.

Although the most widely used soft contact, the elastomer seal, has a very high ratio of deformation to film thickness, a number of other contacts such as the elastomer covered rollers used in the process industries tend to operate with lower ratios. These contacts may, however, still have large enough deformations for the width of the contact zone to be comparable with some dimension of the contact surface, such as the thickness of the surface layer.
