Effect of water stress

If the effect of water stress is to alter regulation of the pathway such that the rate constant for reaction A G is increased or A CP is decreased (which would have an overall effect of conserving nitrogen), then the fractionation at G can be shown to be thereby increased. At present this is speculative, but in fact explanations for the water-stress effect using flow-models are rather constrained. For example, it is not possible to relate what might happen at the kidneys (e.g., resorption of urea) to the amino acid body pool, since the urea cycle is non-reversible. It should be possible to design experiments that test this suggestion. [Pg.234]

In this chapter we review recent developments, concentrating mostly on the effects of water stress because of its great importance, but trying where possible to identify general problems. As noted above, accumulation of ABA in leaves is common under stress, and we review its effects on gas exchange. If the sole direct effect of ABA were to reduce stomatal aperture, then assimilation rate would also decrease because of a lower intercellular partial pressure of C02,pi. Some experiments have suggested that pi is little affected by ABA and that the capacity for CO2 fixation has actually decreased. The situation has become complicated with the observation (Terashima et al., 1988) that application of ABA can cause non-uniform... [Pg.47]

In this paper we summarize our work on the role of indole alkaloids and hydroxamic acids on the resistance of cereals to aphids. In addition, we describe the effects of water stress on susceptibility of barley to aphids. [Pg.130]

Effect of water stress on susceptibility of barley to aphids. Barley seedlings were subjected to water stress. These plants accumulated among other compounds proline and glycine-betaine (Table IV). Also, the more stressed plants were the most susceptible to aphids. The cultivar used in this experiment lacked gramine. However, when a gramine-containing cultivar was used gramine concentration was not affected by water stress. [Pg.130]

The effect of water stress on phenyl pro-panoid metabolism was studied in Padron pepper plants growing in a greenhouse. The soluble phenolic and lignin contents of fruits from control plants were higher than those of water-stressed plants. The amount of capsaicinoids (capsaicin and dihydrocapsaicin) in the fruits of water-stressed plants was higher than that in control plants (Estrada et al., 1999a). [Pg.272]

From these investigations we conclude that water stress causes stomatal closure which restricts the CO2 supply to photosynthesis. This is the primary effect of water stress. When photosynthesis is limited by low CO2, the activity of SPS falls. However, this is a response to information about the prevailing conditions (low rates of photosynthesis) rather than a deleterious effect of water stress. The reduced activity of SPS leads to feedback limited photosynthesis at high CO2 until protein synthesis can restore the activity of SPS. [Pg.3322]

The light and CO2 saturated rate of O2 evolution showed a salt induced decline. This inequivocally demonstrates a non-stomatal effect of salinity on photosynthesis. However, the decline of the light saturated rate of O2 evolution in salt stressed plants was smaller than expected on the basis of A(pi) relationship. These results seem to indicate that some of the non-stomatal effects, as detected by depression of A(p ) curves, are only apparent and could be attributed to patchy stomatal closure. Furthermore, the rate of O2 evolution showed a significant enhancement increasing the partial pressure of CO2 from 50 mbar to 100 mbar (data not shown). These evidences confirm for salt stress other previous observation on the effect of ABA (8, 10, 19) and on the effect of water stress (9 10,... [Pg.3507]

Effects on Abscisic Acid, One of the most clearly defined effects of water stress (decreased turgor) on hormones is the enhancement of ABA biosynthesis in leaves (Wright and Hiron 1972, Milborrow 1974, Zeevaart 1980). The response is rapid and the increase in ABA content is large (Kriedemann et al. 1972, Milborrow 1974, Wright and Hiron 1972, Hiron and Wright 1973). Water stress-induced enhancement of ABA content also occurs in roots (Walton et al. 1976) but the effect is small in some cases (Milborrow and Robinson 1973). [Pg.33]
