Lignins content

Determination of Lignin Content. Lignin content in plants (wood) is determined by direct or indirect methods (21). The direct method includes measurement of acid-insoluble (ie, Klason) lignin after digesting wood with 72% sulfuric acid to solubilize carbohydrates (22). The Klason lignin contents of representative lignifted materials are shown in Table 2. [Pg.140]

Chemical charge, Hquor composition, time of heatup, and time at temperature of reaction are all functions of the wood species or species mix being digested and the intended use of the pulp. A typical set of conditions for southern pine chips in the production of bleachable-grade pulp for fine papers is active alkaH, 18% sulfidity, 25% and Hquor-to-wood ratio, 4 1. Time of heatup is 90 min to 170°C time at temperature of reaction, 90 min at 170°C. Hardwoods require less vigorous conditions primarily because of the lower initial lignin content. [Pg.262]

The viscosity range of CN products can be adjusted in advance by choosing the starting cellulose with an appropriate degree of polymerization (DP). A study of the different celluloses examined the impact of various cellulose properties, such as morphological factors (percent crystallinity, fiber length, and distribution), chemical composition (DP, ash content), and hemiceUulose and lignin content, on the nitration behaviors of cellulose (55). [Pg.266]

Graft polymerization of methylmethacrylate monomer onto pulps of different residual lignin contents using ceric ammonium nitrate as the initiator was carried out to study the influence of this residual lignin on the graft-ability of these pulps (Fig. 3). From this figure one can... [Pg.531]

As stated previously, only about 3 % of the lignin content of sound wood was isolated by alcoholic extraction. It was therefore of interest to determine, whether increased amounts of lignin could be extracted from the decayed wood. Thus, both sound and decayed white Scots... [Pg.79]

As pulping progresses, the lignin content decreases and the acid group content also decreases. Lignin is not usually measured directly but by the degree of oxidisability of the pulp using, for example,... [Pg.90]
