Scientific and Technological Literacy. There is increasing concern within the business community about the effectiveness of the precoUege education system (K—12) in preparing students for an increasingly technically sophisticated workplace. This issue is of special importance to the chemical enterprise, which will find it more difficult to operate effectively in a society that does not understand science and the scientific process (42). 

This has been despite the fact that the UK has developed with a culture that is indifferent to engineering, the respectable professions being those such as law or medicine offering more money and prestige. This deeply rooted attitude was supported by an education system in which on the whole applied science - engineering - was not studied in schools or universities. This contrasts with the rest of world, where such studies were an important part of the curricula of many schools and universities as early as the eighteenth century. Engineering was not considered suitable for those with the ability to enter a university, where arts and sciences were studied. 

There are increasing indications that the traditional education system in which the teacher plays the role of expert and the student that of a passive learner is undergoing reform in many medical schools. The trend can only grow. 

Although there are major differences between national educational systems, some broad guidelines for successful science teacher professional development, culled from a review of recent curriculum development projects (Black Atkin, 1996, pp. 146-147 VanDen Akker, 1998, pp. 443 44) can be applied to a revised curricular provision in respect of the triplet relationship. The intention must be that the perception of new curricular provision by all teachers becomes congment with the intentions, content, and processes, of the formal curriculum. Invitation of good teachers from other countries may be one of the ways to strengthen the education systems of universities, as Japan made snch a way at the modernization. Since many Asian countries English is commonly used beside their native languages, the introduction of foreign teachers may not be a difficnlt problem. Supports from other countries are important. Programmes of JICA or JSPS may be some examples. 

I was penalized for not participating socially. I ll give you an example. One time, a faculty member asked me why I didn t go to the departmental parties. I said that 1 was here to do work not party. Some faculty members told me that it was going to take me longer to complete my degree because I didn t socialize with them. Social interaction seemed to play a direct role on how well you progressed in that educational system. The people who played the game, so to speak, got more fellowships, more notoriety, so forth and so on. 

Teens must differentiate themselves from their parents and establish their own identities. They face the formidable task of negotiating a balance of independence and dependence, autonomy and reliance on others, distance and closeness, change and stability. Yet their efforts to discover their authentic selves are circumscribed by an educational system that dictates where young adults must be and when, how their after-school time is structured, and what life expectations and aspirations they ought to have for themselves. 

Dear Editor I have a few comments about your Know much about science books article. I think your writer wrote an uninformed and not very insightful piece. I don t think the te>ctbooks are to blame for American students lower test scores on the national exams. I don tthink the writer compared the textbooks in different countries with those in the U.S. I thinkthat-< far superior materialsare produced in the U.S. I think the U.S. is far better invested in these areas. I think a better explanation for the lower test scores may be the difference in educational systems. .. 

The atomic concept developed differently in the various religions prevalent in ancient India. These views survived until after the British conquest in the 18th century when the educational system was revamped to emulate the British educational system.
