Science understanding

While understanding chemical reactions is a necessary first step, integrating knowledge of reactions with knowledge of sources, sinks, and transport of chemicals is also necessary. In addition to this "hard science understanding, there is also the need to incorporate social science understanding of human use or abuse of our environmental resources. [Pg.19]

Figure 4.3 illustrates some of the conditions and processes that determine the concentration of molecules available to the sensor intake. This diagram was developed by Phelan and uses terms from environmental and agricultural science. Understanding of each of these processes is needed to make accurate estimates of the expected concentration at any given time and location. Phelan and Webb discuss these processes in some detail [1, p. 54ff], We will consider them briefly in the following sections. [Pg.77]

Thus, I have tried to present a case for the student being made aware of the origins of forensic science, understanding that this discipline is not an American invention of the latter 20th century, appreciating the fact that there has been a steady evolution and accumulation of knowledge of an understanding of how science is ultimately only one of the tools used in the administration of justice. [Pg.3]

There appears to be a profound misunderstanding of the role of modern science and medicine in society. It may cause excessive concerns over minor issues while simultaneously providing false security due to the belief that rapid technological progress implies science understands all natural phenomena and can solve all problems. In fact, science may have created many of these problems for itself. Science has an increasing ability to quantify the minute and uncover previously unknown phenomenon yet it often does not fully comprehend the scientific basis of these newly discovered phenomena. [Pg.147]

Growing demand spurred innovations to increase production rates and reduce unit costs. As the industry shifted from an empirical basis to one grounded in science, understanding the physical and transport properties of the feedstock and products became more important. As this became apparent, some industry participants created physical property laboratories to determine these properties. [Pg.54]

Ion channels are unique objects They have enormous biological and clinical importance. They use simple physical forces to perform those functions. Ion channels are likely to be one of the first important biological systems that can be understood in full detail, in the traditimi of physical science. Understanding ions in channels may be as important to the future of mankind as understanding holes and electrons in semiconductors has been to our recent past. [Pg.1092]

Monitoring of student leaming is varied and continuous, focuses on significant science understandings, and contributes to planning at a number of levels. A range of styles of assessment tasks is used to reflect different aspects of science and types of imderstanding... [Pg.90]

Teachers were asked to complete confidence, attitude, and science understanding tests at the beginning of the course. The same tests were repeated in June 2000, 12 months after the end of the first course and at the end of the second course. The design of these instruments was influenced by the need to match them to the pupils instruments so that the relationship between teachers and pupils attitudes and cognition could be examined. The confidence and attitude questionnaire had 4 parts. [Pg.159]

FIGURE 10.2 Werner Karl Heisenberg (1901-1976). Heisenberg s uncertainty principle completely changed the way science understands the limitations in the ability to measure nature. In World War II, Heisenberg was in charge of the German atomic bomb project, which he apparently purposely delayed to minimize the chance that the Nazis would develop an atomic bomb. [Pg.296]

Chemical professionals should seek to advance chemical science, understand the limitations of their knowledge, and respect the truth. They should ensure that their scientific contributions, and those of dieir collaborators, are thorough, accurate, and unbiased in design, implementation, and presentation. [Pg.775]
