Educational innovation

The title of this section is taken from the title of another essay by Kingery, one of the most eloquent and expert proponents of the central role of ceramics in MSE (for a sketch of his educational innovations, see Section 1.1.1). The essay is in a book series entitled Ceramics and Civilization (Kingery 1990). [Pg.364]

Problem In 1965 some scientists produced a very special nickel-titanium alloy which can remember its programmed form. They called this kind of alloy memory metal and the special compound Nitinol , because it was discovered in the Nickel-Titanium Naval Ordonnance Laboratory. The memory metals are often used in engines, motors and other pieces of equipment, for which it is important to have a certain form at a certain temperature, e.g. for closing a valve. The conversion temperature of the Nitinol composition NqTq is approximately 50°C. Samples of such memory metals, like nitinol wires, can be obtained from Educational Innovations (teachersource.com). [Pg.134]

Other NSF programs, such as Nanoscale Interdisciplinary Research Teams (NIRT) and Nanoscale Exploratory Research (NER), fall outside of EHR and expect investigators to integrate research in a scientific discipline with educational innovation and evaluation. Chapter 13 (1) describes how a chemical education researcher can collaborate with scientists on such projects. [Pg.23]

The conclusion of the cycle of events depicted above is twofold First, a university of technology needs expertise on educational innovation in higher education, and second, it is not clear where this educational expertise should be positioned in the organisation. Below, different organisational positions of educational expertise centres at Dutch universities will be explored from a historical perspective (De Graaff and Sjoer 2006). [Pg.16]

In the previous sections, some of the specific educational innovations employed in PDI were explained. The rest of the chapter assesses these innovations. This section reflects on the significance of what has been achieved, and the next section takes on limitations of our approach. [Pg.429]

The dominant character of this traditional paradigm of educational innovation and teacher professional development is changing. The paradigm of technical rationality proved to be inefficient to cope with the complexity of educational practices and with social change. It became clear that its validity depends on the existence of clear and unambiguous aims and on the predictability of practical situations and effective strategies to cope with them. [Pg.276]
