E enhancements

The size distribution of the clusters produced in the cluster source is quite smooth, containing no information about the clusters except their composition. To obtain information about, for example, the relative stability of clusters, it is often useful to heat the clusters. Hot clusters will evaporate atoms and molecules, preferably until a more stable cluster composition is reached that resists further evaporation. This causes an increase in abundance of the particularly stable species (i.e., enhancing the corresponding peak in the mass spectrum, then commonly termed fragmentation spectrum ). Using sufficiently high laser fluences (=50 /iJ/mm ), the clusters can be heated and ionized simultaneously with one laser pulse. 

Reactions involving the catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides are of major environmental importance for the removal of toxic emissions from both stationary and automotive sources. As shown in this section electrochemical promotion can affect dramatically the performance of Rh, Pd and Pt catalysts (commonly used as exhaust catalysts) interfaced with YSZ, an O2 ion conductor. The main feature is strong electrophilic behaviour, i.e. enhanced rate and N2 selectivity behaviour with decreasing Uwr and , due to enhanced NO dissociation.

Thus in the two typical experiments cited, a sequential combination of partial polymerization, with its 14.2 % e.e. increase, and partial hydrolysis, with its 9.6 % e.e. increase, resulted in an impressive overall l > d e.e. enhancement of 23.8%. 

These model experiments involving e.e. amplification of amino adds during polymerization admittedly need prebiotically unrealistic substrates as well as carefully contrived experimental conditions. Nevertheless, it is noteworthy that both secondary structures of proteins, a-helices, and P-sheets have been found capable of acting stereoselectively to provide e.e. enhancements during these model polymerizations.

These conformer populations were confirmed by a number of n.O.e. measurements (the H2—H5 distance can act as a marker in identifying the ring form). The case of a hexasaccharide (compound 23 in Ref. 9) where the three IdoA residues yield different n.O.e. enhancements, is striking. Moreover, models computed with molecular mechanics have been put forward for the peculiar pentasaccharide of heparin. The models are in acceptable agreement with the observed vicinal coupling constants and n.O.e. values (10) (a full paper by Ragazzi, M. et al. Carbohvdr. Res.. is in press). 

It can be seen from Fig. 23.3 that the values of the pressure along the length of the combustor are higher almost everywhere in the case of the elliptic nozzles, i.e., enhancement of supersonic combustion took place when kerosene was injected through elliptic nozzles. Figure 23.3 shows that at the aft of the combustor, a flow separation occurred for the case ER = 0 (due to overexpansion of the flow). However the dosages that are needed to inhibit gastric acid secretion are higher than those for achieving cytoprotective effects, i.e. enhanced secretion of mucus and HCO3 . Its indication is mainly protection against NSAID-associated gastric ulceration. Only misoprostol 800 pg/day has been directly shown to reduce the risk of ulcer complications.
