Dual advantages

Betamethasone is hardly ever used orally. It has a long duration of activity and can therefore also be used for alternate-day therapy. The parenteral formulation is also the sodium phosphate salt which when given IV or IM has a rapid onset of action. There are many similarities with dexamethasone such as their metabolic pathways and the indications for which both steroids are used, like the prevention of neonatal RDS and reduction of raised intracranial pressure. Combinations of betamethasone acetate and sodium phosphate have, when used for intra-articular and intra-lesional injections, the dual advantage of a rapid onset of action together with the long duration of action of a depot preparation. 

Recently, the group of Salama has, however, begun to apply the above technique to the study of vibronic spectra of polyacenes that have the dual advantage that they have rather large electron affinities and that they absorb in the near-lR region where alkali atoms, in particular Na, do not absorb. The extreme toxicity of the arylsilatranes has found practical application. (p-Chlorophenyl)silatrane has been marketed in the United States as a rat poison. This compound has the dual advantages of not being dermally absorbed by humans and of being rapidly deactivated in vivo, so that the dead rats are not toxic (7, 87). 

In addition, for similar loadings of Ca and Mg, 1.0 and 1.3 meq/g, respectively, the Ca loaded sample lost more weight than the Mg loaded sample for all residence times. This implies that for combustion, Ca has a dual advantage over Mg, First, at short residence times when pyrolysis dominates, volatile matter yield is higher. Second, at intermediate residence times, catalysis of the C-O2 reaction occurs. There is probably no advantage in the final char burnout stage, however. 

This result has the dual advantages of being consistent with the mechanism, and yet requiring less experimental data. In any case, eqns. (c), (f) and (h) show that either there is another unaccounted for reaction which is consuming O2 or there is another reaction producing NO if we are to accept the experimentally determined stoichiometries. The reaction of NO with NH2 should not be important in this system if it were, d[NO]/d would not equal —d[NH3]/df.

Optical rotation has the dual advantages of historical use and widespread recognition in the compendia. For an enantiopure material, it defines its configuration when used in conjunction with other valid chemical tests. However, optical rotation has been used ineffectively when the primary analytical goal is the determination of stereochemical purity. The limits selected for the specification seem to be unrelated to the purity required by other methods. For example, the compendial monograph for naproxen requires that the drug substance meet a specification of "between -f-63.0 and -1-68.5"" in a chloroform solution. Based on the published specific rotation, this corresponds to a stereochemical purity of 95.5 to 103.7%, compared to the assay limits of 98.5 to 100,5%, determined by titration with sodium hydroxide (5).

Litton s solution, as well as that of Truppman and Maschek, had the dual advantage over Baker s of being stable in space and time. These aqueous and glycerinated solutions with concentrations of around 50% in phenol contained croton oil. Once prepared, they could be kept for several years when stored away from light and heat sources. Litton s solution contains more croton oil than that of Truppman and Mascheck. 

Metronidazole given for 10 days is effective as monotherapy in many cases of hepatic abscess and has the dual advantage of being both amebicidal and active against anaerobic bacteria. However, treatment failures can occur and follow-up therapy with chloroquine is highly recommended. Luminal amebicides should also be given to eradicate intestinal infection. In the case of diesel fuels lowered aromatics reduce PAH emissions and improve fuel quality. This dual advantage does not apply to gasoline which when its aromatics content is reduced, is lowered in quality. This can be avoided by cutting out the high carbon atom number aromatic fraction which in addition is associated with high fuel PAH content. 

Many accelerators are available as dust free dispersions, preferably in an ethylene-propylene diene terpolymer/polyvinyl acetate blend. These have the dual advantage of zero loss as dust when the pellets are crashed as they are mixed, and rapid incorporation into the compound due to their low melting point. These materials are of particularly value when the melting point of the dispersed chemical is relatively high and all show generally rapid dispersion rates, giving high batch-to-batch consistency.
