Hepatic abscess

Signs and Symptoms Depend on the site of infection. Infection may produce osteomyelitis or arthritis pneumonia [with chills, productive cough, low blood pressure (hypotension), difficulty breathing (dyspnea), or chest pain] meningitis or cerebral abscesses (with headache, fever, vomiting, stupor, coma) or intra-abdominal infections (with biliary drainage, hepatic abscess, pancreatic abscess, peritoneal exudate). [Pg.517]

Hepatic abscess, ameboma, and other extraintestinal disease Metronidazole, 750 mg 3 times daily (or 500 mg IV every 6 hours) for 10 days Dehydroemetine2 or emetine, 1 mg/kg SC or IM for 8-10 days, followed by (liver abscess only) chloroquine, 500 mg twice daily for 2 days, then 500 mg daily for 21 days... [Pg.1133]

Hepatic abscesses An abscess is displayed as low-signal in the Ti image and signal-intensive in the T2 image. The perifocal oedema cannot be separated from the lesion. Gadolinium CM can be used to visualize a thick abscess wall in the Ti image. Gas appears hypodense and cannot be differentiated from prior bleeding. Treatment of such abscesses is easily monitored. [Pg.178]

Antibody titers against Entamoeba histolytica by use of an enzyme immunoassay were strongly reactive in Amy Biasis blood. A diagnosis of amoebiasis was made. Her physicians started nitroimidazole amoebicides intravenously in a dose of 500 mg every 6 hours for 10 days. By the third day of treatment, Amy began to feel noticeably better. Her physicians told her that they expected a full clinical response in 95% of patients with amoebic liver abscesses treated in this way, although her multiple hepatic abscesses adversely affected her prognosis to a degree. [Pg.846]
