In pharmaceutical applications, sorbitol is used as a tablet diluent in wet granulation or dry compression formulations. It is commonly used in chewable tablets because of its sweet taste, and it is also used as a plasticizer for gelatin in capsule formulations. Sorbitol is utilized in sugar-free liquid preparations and as a stabilizer for drug, vitamin, and antacid suspensions. When it is used in syrups, crystallization around bottle caps is prevented. [Pg.463]

Uses. A principal use of thionyl chloride is in the conversion of acids to acid chlorides, which are employed in many syntheses of herbicides (qv), surfactants (qv), drugs, vitamins (qv), and dyestuffs. Possible laiger-scale applications are in the preparation of engineering thermoplastics of the poly aryl ate type made from iso- and terephthaloyl chlorides, which can be made from the corresponding acids plus thionyl chloride (186) (see Engineering plastics). [Pg.141]

The central cavity of the cylinder-shaped cyclodextrins behaves as an empty capsule It can accommodate so-called guest molecules of appropriate size, shape, and polarity. This "molecular encapsulation" can be utilized for stabilization and for enhancement of solubility of drugs, vitamins, flavors, etc., and utilizing the selectivity of the inclusion complexation, it can be applied for separation of substances, either by non-chromatographic methods, or chromatographic methods. [Pg.200]

SAFETY PROFILE A powerful irritant to skin, eyes, and mucous membranes. Flammable when exposed to heat or flame. Ammonia is liberated and Uthium hydroxide is formed when this compound is exposed to moisture. Reacts violently with water or steam to produce toxic and flammable vapors. Vigorous reaction with oxidizing materials. Exothermic reaction with acid or acid fumes. When heated to decomposition it emits very toxic fumes of LiO, NH3, and NOx. Used in synthesis of drugs, vitamins, steroids, and other organics. See also LITHIUM COMPOUNDS, AMIDES, AMMONIA, and LITHIUM HYDROXIDE. [Pg.841]

In liquid preparations sorbitol is used as a vehicle in sugar-free formulations and as a stabilizer for drug, vitamin, and antacid suspensions. It has also been shown to be a suitable carrier to enhance the in vitro dissolution rate of indometa-cin. In syrups it is effective in preventing crystallization around the cap of bottles. Sorbitol is additionally used in injectable and topical preparations and therapeutically as an osmotic laxative. [Pg.718]

Electrophoresis on a macro scale has been applied to a variety of difficult analytical separation problems inorganic anions and cations, amino acids, catecholamines, drugs, vitamins, carbohydrates, peptides, proteins, nucleic acids, nucleotides, polynucleotides, and numerous other species. A particular strength of electrophoi esis is its unique ability to separate charged macromolecules of interest to biochemists, biologists, and clinical chemists. For many years, electrophoresis has been the powerhouse method of separating proteins (enzymes, hormones, antibodies) and nucleic acids (DNA, RNA), for which it offers unparalleled resolution. ... [Pg.1003]

Analytical scale SFE was introduced by German scientists at the end of the 1970 s for the extraction of various compounds such as drugs, vitamins, and dyes using carbon dioxide as extraction media ( -iS). A major increase in analytical scale SFE applications was however first seen in the late 1980 s, when POPs were extracted from environmental samples (7), fats from food (S), and various components from polymers (9). Today SFE is a well-established extraction technique, adopted as a reference method by the U.S. EPA (10-12), and the theory and instrumentation is described in several review papers (13-17) and books (18-21). [Pg.128]

Immunoassay techniques are important for the specific determination of hormones, drugs, vitamins, and other compounds at nanogram and smaller levels. In these techniques, an antigen and a (specific) antibody react to form a complex or precipitate. The first analytical application was in the form of radioimmunoassay (RIA) in which Berson and Yalow demonstrated the ability to selectively measure... [Pg.683]

Throughout this book we have encountered many drugs, vitamins, and hormones, and in many cases we have discussed the mechanism by which each compound produces its physiological effect. Table 30.2 lists some of these compounds, their uses, and where in the text they are discussed. Now we will take a look at how drugs are discovered and how they are named, and we will examine some of the techniques currently used by scientists in their search for new drugs. [Pg.1207]

Warfarin reduces the synthesis of prothrombin and several other clotting factors. Carbamazepine and rifampin interfere with this action by increasing the metabolism of warfarin. Cholestyramine decreases the oral absorption of warfarin and other acidic drugs. Vitamin K is the antidote to excessive effects of warfarin. Antiplatelet drugs such as naproxen enhance the anticoagulant effects of warfarin. The answer is (C). [Pg.537]
