For human use, empty gelatin capsules are manufactured in eight sizes, ranging from 000 (the largest) to 5 (the smallest). The volumes and approximate capacities for the traditional eight sizes are listed in Table 1. 

Most capsules are filled on piston-tamp machines. These are fully automatic fillers in which pistons or tamping pins lightly compress the individual doses of powders into plugs (sometimes referred to as slugs ) and eject the plugs into the empty capsule bodies. The compression forces are low, often in the range of 50 200 N, or about 50-100-fold less than typical tablet compression forces. Hence, the plugs frequently will have the consistency of very soft compacts and will not be able to be recovered intact from the filled capsule.

Empty capsules or capsules containing rate islets, in a packed capsule volume of 0.2-0.5 ml, were sterilely transplanted into the peritoneal cavity of metofane-anesthetized mice. Lubiprostone is a chloride channel activator that acts locally on the gut to accelerate genitourinary transit time and delay gastric emptying. It is approved for chronic idiopathic constipation in adults. The dose is 24 mg capsule twice daily with food. Lubiprostone may cause headache, diarrhea, and nausea. 

Zegerid is a combination product containing omeprazole 20 or 40 mg with sodium bicarbonate in immediate-release oral capsules and powder for oral suspension. It should be taken on an empty stomach at least 1 hour before a meal. Zegerid offers an alternative to the delayed-release capsules or the IV formulation in adult patients with nasogastric tubes. 

Mix thick mixtures with equal amount of water. Crush the tablet, open and empty the capsule, dissolve with 20 ml water. NB Also the undissolved content should normally be given. 

In the preparation of capsules, various colored empty gelatin capsule shells may be used to hold the powdered drug mixture. Many commercial capsules are prepared with capsule bodies of one color and a different colored capsule cap, resulting in a two-colored capsule. This makes certain commercial products even more readily identifiable than solid colored capsules. For powdered drugs, dispensed as such or compressed into tablets, a generally larger proportion of dye is required (about 0.1%) to achieve the desired hue than with liquid preparations. 

Take on an empty stomach at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals and at least 1 hour apart from any other drug, food, or milk. Swallow the capsules whole and do not open or chew. 

If the capsule cannot be swallowed (eg, time of surgery, unconscious patient), make a hole in both ends of the capsule with an 18 gauge needle and extract the contents into a syringe. Empty the contents into the patient s in situ nasogastric tube and wash down the tube with 30 mg normal saline. 

Extended-release capsules - The extended-release capsule should be administered once daily. Administer InnoPranXL at bedtime (approximately 10 pm) consistently either on an empty stomach or with food. The starting dose is 80 mg but dosage should be individualized and titration may be needed to a dose of 120 mg or higher. Doses of InnoPran XL above 120 mg had no additional effects on blood pressure. The time needed for full antihypertensive response is variable, but is usually achieved within 2 to 3 weeks. 

Difficuity swaiiowing - For patients who have difficulty swallowing capsules, add 1 tablespoon of applesauce to an empty bowl, open the omeprazole capsule, and empty the pellets onto the applesauce. Mix the pellets with the applesauce and swallow immediately. Do not heat or chew the applesauce. Do not chew or crush the pellets. Do not store the pellet/applesauce mixture for future use. 

Enteric-coated capsules In the presence of food, C ax AUC for didanosine capsules were reduced by approximately 46% and 19%, respectively, compared with the fasting state. Take didanosine capsules on an empty stomach.
