Open drain

Drain Opener. This reaction MUST be performed in an area of adequate upward ventilation, or at feast with the air flowing away from you.

Vent and drain openings associated with hydrocarbon fluids or gases... 

Single piece drain rim or drain pan baseplates shall be fnmished for horizontal pumps. The rim or pan of the baseplate shall be sloped at least 1 120 toward the pnmp end, where a tapped drain opening at least 2 NFS shall be located to effect complete drainage. 

No open process or chemical sewer drains should be under or in the drainage zone from a fired process heater since the heater could ignite flammable vapors present in the process/chemical sewer. Where pro-cess/chemical sewer drains are required at a fired heater during cleanup and maintenance, the drain openings should be sealed by a gasketed and bolted cover prior to startup of the heater. 

Consult your owner s manual to ensure that any air eliminators are used properly. Generally, the procedure is to close tightly all drain openings, pour in engine coolant concentrate, then fill with water of good quality to the proper level. Also, fill the coolant recovery system reservoir to the proper level with properly diluted engine coolant (see Fig. 6). (Avoid use of water containing excessive amounts of minerals, impurities, or suspended matter.)...

Turn off steam and close drain. Open valve to 300-liter permeate vessel to charge lines with sterile air to maintain positive pressure while cooling. 

The 11 white, solid household products used in this experiment are table salt, baking soda, washing soda, drain opener, boric acid, plaster of Paris, calcium supplement (calcium citrate), cornstarch, fruit sugar, table sugar, and epsom salt. 

Handle drain opener with care. Do not allow it to contact skin or clothing. 

Potential injuries include cuts from broken test tubes, bums from contacting hot water or hot plate, chemical bums from drain opener, etc. These are treatable on site. 

What should you do if you weren t wearing gloves and you accidentally contacted drain opener with your fingers ... 

Drain opener (solid, 100% sodium hydroxide, such as Red Devil Lye)... 

Liquid drain opener (or other product containing sodium hypochlorite)... 

Potassium hydroxide (KOFI) is used to manufacture soaps, drugs, alkaline batteries, adhesives, and fertilizers. Like sodium hydroxide, KOH can be used in drain openers. Potassium perchlorate (KC104) is used in fireworks, sparklers, explosives, and solid rocket propellants. 

There are a couple of very important exceptions to this requirement for high grade sulfuric acid, and a great hardware store product which can thereby become quite useful. That product is Liquid Fire drain opener. It is roughly 80-85% sulfuric acid, and sells for about 7 per quart. Crude as it is, it is perfectly suitable for use in making fuming nitric acid by the distillation method given earlier in this chapter. It also works just fine in the Hardware Store Nitro recipe which you will find in the next chapter. 

Into the flask, put about 150 ml of Liquid Fire drain opener. Next add 100 grams of potassium nitrate. This should either be a reasonably pure stump remover such as the Green Thumb brand, or a dirtier brand purified by the directions given in the nitric acid section. Lumps in the stump remover should be broken up so that a fine powder is added to the acid drain opener. 

When the acetone and peroxide solution has cooled down to 40 F, the sulfuric acid can be added. Liquid Fire drain opener found at hardware stores will work in this reaction, but the concentrated lab grade is better. Measure out 2.5 ml of sulfuric acid. Then with stirring, add the sulfuric acid one drop at a time. Watch the temperature of the mixture during the addition of sulfuric acid. One should not allow it to rise above 50 F. If it gets close to 50 F, stop adding sulfuric acid and allow the mixture to cool back down before adding any more sulfuric acid. 

At 2345 hr the following evening, both the fuel and air were shut off, the damper was opened fully, the bung hole closure tiles were removed, and the cinder drain openings were removed. Within 20 min the furnace temperature was 1550 F (843 C), and that temperature was held until 0800 hour the next morning, when the furnace was started up without rethreading. In this second case, the cooling air velocity was much lower therefore oxidation was much slower.
