Double binding

The complexes formed by H5 bound to 01 were found to be slightly less stable than the new with H5 bound to 02, for both the guanidinium and the pyrolidinium complex. Both type of complexes feature bifurcated hydrogen bonds, with 02 bound to H5 and H6. The double binding is achieved with some cost to the linearity of the hydrogen bond. The most stable complexes have been found to be planar. 

Several people found themselves in a difficult double bind. Intimacy demands honesty, yet questions of authenticity do not stop with disclosure of one s psychiatric history. Recall that people suffering from mental illnesses like depression remain deeply confused about whether... 

Another perspective comes from famiiy systems theory, which characterizes the schizophrenic patient s family as having disordered communication, with various members playing unusual or aberrant roles. According to this theory, patients experience double binds when faced with contradictory expectations ( 7). Related controversial hypotheses held that the schizophrenogenic mother was the critical factor and then later that the schizophrenic s father also played a significant role (8, 9 and 10). Intensive therapy, in the context of in-hospital separation from the family, was considered the treatment of choice. In contrast to classic psychodynamic therapy, which focuses on the individual patient, this approach attempts to resolve conflicts in the family system, as well as in the patient s psyche. Typically, this involves sessions that include all or as many members as possible. Thus, even though one member is identified as the patient, it is the disturbed communication and interactions among all members that is the focus of therapy. This and subsequent therapeutic approaches may be most effective when medication is used concurrently. 

The third binding interaction introduced in the hydroxylation of 134 made the substrate present its face, not its edge, to the Mn=0 of catalyst 131, but it seemed likely that double binding of the substrate could also achieve this if the binding groups were attached to C-3 and C-6 rather than C-3 and C-17 as in 134. Thus we synthesized a new substrate, 136, and examined its hydroxylation by catalyst 131 [197]. We saw that indeed there was hydroxylation at C-9 to form 137, but there was also some hydroxylation at C-15 to form 138. With the lack of a binding interaction at C-17, apparently the substrate had slipped a little to the left, moving C-15 into position to be attacked. 

The stereochemistry of the reaction in which C-4 is oxidized to give intermediate 41 is difficult to envisage, because the hydride abstraction and addition would have to take place from opposite sides of the carbonyl group. Various solutions to this problem have included (a) a double binding-site for the substrate, which can transfer from one site to the other as the intermediate 4-ulose,146... 

The homobifunctional cross-linker, glutaraldehyde (GA), can be used for conjugating the molecules containing primary amine groups with amine-terminated PMMA. This is where the formation of Schiff bases with possible rearrangement to a stable product or through a Michael-type addition reaction occurred. The reaction takes place at points of double-bind unsaturation created by polymerization of the GA in solution (121-122) (reaction shown in scheme 8.4). 

Zinc is relatively nontoxic but, if present in the diet at high concentration and in readily available form, it can interfere with the absorption of calcium, copper, iron, and cadmium and can produce anemia. These elements, in turn, can decrease zinc absorption if present in sufficient quantities. Use of zinc salt lozenges has been claimed to reduce the duration of the common cold. However, many randomized, double-bind, placebo-controlled trials have failed to show any beneficial effects of zinc lozenges in reducing the duration of upper respiratory tract viral infections. 

Instead of communicating these messages that put their only child in a very painful double bind (wanting to leave/not wanting to leave), parents better serve the late adolescent by using words that can free him or her instead. Helpful Messages... 

Extraction mechanisms on bounded silicates are based on polar and nonpolar interactions. Polar sorbents are recommended for organic sulfur compounds, because the sulfur atoms in organic substances often generate polar properties. However, these properties are also displayed by other hetero atoms, double bindings, and aromatic structures. Therefore, extraction on bounded silicates can be assessed as relatively unselective.

Maybe the target nowadays is not to discover what you are, but to refuse what you are. We have to imagine and to build up what we could be to get rid of this kind of political double bind, which is the simultaneous individualization and totalization of modem power structures. The conclusion wouid be that the political, ethical, social, philosophical problem of our days is not to try to liberate the individual tom the state and the state s institutions but to liberate us both tom the state and from the type of individualization, which is linked to the state. We have to promote new forms of subjectivity through the refusal of this kind of individuality, which has been imposed on us for several centuries (Foucault, 1982 785). 

The objective of the experiments of the proceeding section was monoprotection of a difunctional reagent. Usually simultaneous single and double binding of the difunctional reagent could not be avoided. A few experiments have been performed to test how many doubly bound species can be formed deliberately, and to create shape-sdective cavities in the polymer, as described in detail in the chapter by Wulff.

Lehn and coworkers have also prepared a series of bis-intercaland compounds and their reference mono-intercaland partners to see the affinity enhancement provided by this double binding motif (27-36, Scheme 10). Evidence of intercalation was obtained from the hypo-chromism observed in the UV-vis spectra of the nucleotide-ligand systems. While differences in stability were obtained for the different nucleic bases, the constants for the nucleotides containing the same base pair and different... 

Leznoff and Goldwasser (1977) used a hydroxymethylated polymer for monoblocking of symmetrical diacid chlorides. The unblocked acid chloride group was then converted to an amide and the polymer-bound derivatives were cleaved from the polymer and characterized as monoamide monoesters (Scheme 9-11). The functionalized products were obtained in high yield and in pure state, indicating that there was no observable double binding of the acids on polymer support. It was stressed that proper choice of the reaction conditions can alter the ability of the polymer to undergo interresin reactions. 

The preparation of monoethers of symmetrical dihydroxy aromatic compounds has been reported (Leznoff and Dixit, 1977). The dihydroxy aromatic compounds were bound to a benzoyl chloride support via a monoester bond, reacted with diazomethane, and cleaved from the resin by base hydrolysis. Yields ranged from 20 to 75%, depending on the compound. Catechol and 1,4-dihydroxynaphthalene, although attached to the polymer, did not yield any product. It was found that double-binding to the polymer was minimal and was not the cause of lowered yields. 

Moreover, not only must the Archbishop speak under this conjuration , but Henry blandly tells him that he himself will hear, note, and believe in heart / That what you speak is in your conscience washed . The logic here is precisely similar to that of the paradoxical I do believe her though I know she lies in sonnet 138, except that the speaker in this case directs the animus of his words not at himself, as the self-mocking speaker of the sonnet does, but at his hapless auditor, trapped in an inescapable double-bind. Later, Heruy goes one better and takes a similarly hectoring tone with God himself ...
