Double-action

A one-piston double-action pump is called a double-acting simplex (since there are older single-action steam and pneumatic driven simplex pumps). 

A two piston double-action pump is called a duplex pump. 

Mud pumps consume more than 60% of all the horsepower used in rotary drilling. Mud pumps are used to circulate drilling fluid through the mud circulation system while drilling. A pump with two fluid cylinders, as shown in Figure 4-99, is called a duplex pump. A three-fluid-cylinder pump, as shown in Figure 4-100, is called a triplex pump. Duplex pumps are usually double action, and triplex pumps are usually single action.

The actuator and power supply for any depressuring valve with a double action or an energize to open actuator that may be exposed to fire should be fireproofed for a minimum of 15 minutes, per the UL 1 709 high rise fire test. Fireproofing of the actuator and power supply is not required with the fail-open design.

The only current evidence to support this view is the finding that the addition of desipramine to fluoxetine was better than desipramine alone in the treatment of patients with depression (J. C. Nelson et al. 1991). Desipramine alone resulted in the expected improvement of approximately 20% at week 1 and 40% at 2 weeks in 52 patients. In patients treated with the combination of fluoxetine and desipramine, the response was greatly accelerated, and a response of 42% was seen at the first week of treatment. At the end of 4 weeks of treatment, 71 % of the 14 patients on combined treatment were in complete remission compared with only 14% of those receiving desipramine alone. This study provides some evidence of the better efficacy seen with a double action on both noradrenaline and serotonin, but firm conclusions cannot be drawn because of the open nature of the investigation.

The double action pistol enables the firer firstly to cock the hammer and rotate the cylinder and then to release the hammer - all as a result of one long trigger pull. In most designs the weapon can also be thumb-cocked like a single action revolver. The first double action revolver of significance was produced by Beaumont in London in 1855. This could function as either a double action or single action revolver, and the idea was used in the Adams revolver which became the official Brit service revolver. Colt then gave up his Brit factory in 1857 and returned to the USA. His six-chambered percussion 1860 model in. 44 cal was extensively used in the American Civil War and more than 200,000 were made...

In the course of the integration of European states and the removal of trade barriers, national standardization loses importance considerably. The majority of electrical standards comes into existence by international cooperation with IEC, International Electrotechnical Commission, Geneva/Switzerland. On the basis of IEC Standards many European Standards have been developed in the past. This work has been done by CENELEC, Comite Europeen de Normalisation Electrotechnique, Brussels/Belgium. European Standards or Norms (EN) often deviate from their IEC origins in their technical content. To avoid double action and to ensure a more effective standardization procedure, IEC and CENELEC are now working in closer cooperation. CENELEC is a private organization and does not act as an institution of the European Union at all. This fact indicates that European Standards need a legal act to come into force. Members of CENELEC are the national committees for standardization of the member states (not identical with the European Union). 

The pipettes are all based on air displacement with a simple plunger and are provided with non-wettable plastic (usually polypropylene) disposable tips to contain the solution, preventing any contamination of the pipette itself. Most micropipettes have a double action plunger system, i.e. calibration and overshoot positions, which ensures that the sample is completely dispensed. There are many manufacturers offering a complete range of volumes in addition some have available a selection of pipettes with adjustable volumes. 

Pipetting precision of blood or serum is improved by taking up a volatile liquid, e.g. n-heptane, between the bottom and first stops of a double action micropipette. The sample is taken up in the calibrated part and both are then injected into the furnace. The heptane washes out the sample completely and is evaporated off at the drying stage. 

Some additives, like benzyl alcohol, are added for a double action. Benzyl alcohol 0.9% is widely used as a bactericide. In addition, benzyl alcohol reduces radiolysis in radiopharmaceuticals and thus acts as a stabilizer.

This large category of depressants comprises alcohol "sleeping pills/ and certain tranquilizers. In low doses these drugs promote relaxation and restfulness (sedation), especially in the daytime. Larger doses, especially at night, induce sleep (the word hypnosis comes from the name of the Greek god of sleep). "Sedative-hypnotic" refers to this double action. 

These sprayers involve a double-action hydraulic pump which is operated with a push-pull motion. The pesticide is sucked into the cylinder and pushed... 

A typical example of an ester acting as a penetration enhancer is isopropyl myristate. Isopropyl myristate might show a double action influence on the partition between vehicles and skin by solubilization and disruption of lipid packing, thus increasing the lipid fluidity...
