The influence of the presence of alcohols on the CMC is also well known. In 1943 Miles and Shedlovsky [117] studied the effect of dodecanol on the surface tension of solutions of sodium dodecyl sulfate detecting a significant decrease of the surface tension and a displacement of the CMC toward lower surfactant concentrations. Schwuger studied the influence of different alcohols, such as hexanol, octanol, and decanol, on the surface tension of sodium hexa-decyl sulfate [118]. The effect of dodecyl alcohol on the surface tension, CMC, and adsorption behavior of sodium dodecyl sulfate was studied in detail by Batina et al. [119]. [Pg.250]

Treating petroleum oils with 3-5% calcium alkyl salicylate and 0.5-3% triethanolamine salts of phosphoric acid esters and ethoxylated dodecyl alcohol increases oxidation-thermal stability at 180-200°C in the manufacture of oil for metal parts quenching. The agent provides also short-term anticorrosion protection of the hardened articles [261]. Phosphoric acid salt alkyl esters are used in anticorrosives and aqueous dispersions in waterborne polyester coatings for metals [244]. [Pg.608]

In an attempt to create particles with different sizes and properties, ligands other than dodecanethiol were used to create polydispersed colloids from the SMAD method. Thus, dodecylamine, trioctyl phosphine, and dodecyl alcohol were used in addition to dodecanethiol. The results of these studies led to nearly monodispersed stable colloids for the phosphine protected particles at 6.3 nm in diameter (Figure 13). [Pg.240]

Further experimentation may lead to a homogeneous sample however, it does appear that the amine head group does not have as strong an affinity for the silver atoms as the mercapto group. The dodecyl alcohol ligand was a poor ligand for creation of silver particles and only large particles were produced that were either too... [Pg.240]

The primary application of these alcohols is the manufacture of anionic or nonionic surfactants for personal cleansing products, most of which end up in your wastewater treatment plants and rivers. Microorganisms don t chew up branch-chain surfactants as well as they do the straight ones. It used to be, for example that the surfactant based on the sodium salt of dodecyl benzene sulfonate, a 12-carbon branch chained anionic surfactant, was found to be slowing, down water treatment processes. Dodecyl alcohol as a raw material for these surfactants has been largely replaced by laurel alcohol, a 12-carbon straight-chain, linear alcohol. If you look at the bottle next time you shampoo your hair and rinse, you ll see sulfonates based on laurel alcohol listed, but none based on dodecyl. [Pg.216]

Sodium dodecylsulfonate (SDS) was prepared from dodecyl alcohol by Ben Den Chemical Company, Naperville, IL. The material was recrystallized by dissolution in hot ethanol solution, filtering and cooling to crystallize the SDS. The precipitate was filtered, washed with cold ethanol, and dried in a dessicator under vacuum. Analytical-grade HCl and NaOH were used for pH adjustment and NaCl for controlling ionic strength. [Pg.292]

The protein used was crystalline bovine serum albumin (BSA) obtained from Armour Laboratories. Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was synthesized from pure dodecyl alcohol and chlorosulfonic acid, recrystallized, and washed with ethyl ether. Sulfuric acid was reagent grade purchased from the J. T. Baker Chemical Co. and used directly. Reagent grade potassium hydroxide purchased from the Mallinkrodt Co. was purified by foaming a concentrated solution, removing the foam, and using the solution directly. [Pg.157]

For SDS, the reaction proceeded to a reproducible end point rapidly —viz., 1 to 2 minutes—when nonionic surface active impurities such as parent dodecyl alcohol, DOH, were removed by ethyl ether extractions. This impurity effect was verified by adding traces of alkyl alcohol—viz., 1 X 10 9 mole per liter—to purified SDS, whereupon the penetration reaction rate was halved. A possible explanation for this behavior is that formation of an SDS-DOH interfacial complex reduced the SDS activity in the interface and consequently its rate of reaction with the protein monolayer. The reasons for the somewhat slower rate of reaction of Cetab with the protein film are more obscure. The reaction rate did not increase after extracting the detergent repeatedly. Two possible reasons for the time dependence in this case may have been that (1) the ether extraction method was not effective in removing surface active impurities, or (2) because of the greater bulk of the Cetab hydrocarbon chain, Ci6 vs. Ci2 for SDS, more time was required for diffusion and appropriate orientation before complex formation. [Pg.159]
