The influence of the presence of alcohols on the CMC is also well known. In 1943 Miles and Shedlovsky [117] studied the effect of dodecanol on the surface tension of solutions of sodium dodecyl sulfate detecting a significant decrease of the surface tension and a displacement of the CMC toward lower surfactant concentrations. Schwuger studied the influence of different alcohols, such as hexanol, octanol, and decanol, on the surface tension of sodium hexa-decyl sulfate [118]. The effect of dodecyl alcohol on the surface tension, CMC, and adsorption behavior of sodium dodecyl sulfate was studied in detail by Batina et al. [119]. [Pg.250]

Biological. Dodecane may biodegrade in two ways. The first is the formation of dodecyl hydroperoxide which decomposes to 1-dodecanol. The alcohol is oxidized forming dodecanoic acid. The other pathway involves dehydrogenation to 1-dodecene, which may react with water, giving 1-dodecanol (Dugan, 1972). [Pg.529]

The mass spectrometric characterization of an AEO siufactant (dodecyl alcohol with 9 EO) by means of multi-stage ion-trap MS-MS was reported by Levine et al. [34]. The fragmentation observed include (a) consecutive losses of ethylene oxide luiits, (b) loss of dodecene followed by consecutive losses of ethylene oxide units, (c) loss of dodecanol followed by consecutive losses of ethylene oxide units, and (d)... [Pg.222]

Surfactants are those chemicals whose molecules have two parts of widely differing polarity and solubility. The soaps, for example, have an ionizing salt head to the molecule and a long, non-polar hydrocarbon tail . A different type are the polyoxyethylene ethers of dodecyl alcohol (dodecanol), e.g. Ci2H25 0 (CH2 CH2 0)6 H. These contain the non-polar dodecyl group (C12H25-), from dodecyl alcohol, at one end of the molecule and the successive polar ether linkages at the other. [Pg.145]

The use of binders is very important in this type of formulation, since these components allow powder to be compressed, make it applicable and adhere to skin they determine the final touch and increase the intensity of the shade. Binders are of lipid nature, such as esters (e.g. octyl dodecyl stearoyl stearate, isopropyl isostearate), silicones (e.g. dime-thicone, phenyltrimethicone, bisphenylhexamethicone), polymers (e.g. polybutene, tri-methylsiloxisilate), fatty alcohols (e.g. octyl dodecanol, lanolin alcohol), mineral oils (e.g. paraffin oil). [Pg.147]

Reaction orders in alcohol and add were obtained from a study of the first of these reactions under non-stoichiometric conditions. This is not possible for a polyesterification, carried out in an excess of one of the reactants since in this case stoichiometry is required. The orders in acid and alcohol relative to the reaction of 1-dodecanol with dodecanoic add in dodecyl dodecanoate are 2 and 1 respectively which, according to Solomon, corresponds to an Aac2 mechanism. Since the dielectric constant is low, the ions are assumed to be associated as ion pairs ... [Pg.75]

Scheme 5.4, a). Selective etherification of two alcohols based on their difference in hydrophobicity can also be accomplished. When equal amounts of dodecanol and propanol were etherified with benzhydrol in the presence of DBSA in water, benzhydryl dodecyl ether was selectively obtained (Scheme 5.4, b). Thioetherification between a thiol and an alcohol can also be achieved (Scheme 5.4, c). [Pg.154]
