Chemical Abstracts. Chemical Abstracts (CA) [23] is a collection of chemical information, with nearly 16 million abstracts of journal articles, patents, and other documents. In addition, the CAOLD database contains over 3 million abstracts from 1907-1966. Sources for CA include more than 8000 journals, patents, technical reports, books, conference proceedings, and dissertations from around the world. CA patent database covers 29 national patent offices and two international bodies. About 16% of the CA database, approximately 2.5 million records, are from the patent literature. Chemical Abstracts is commercially available from the American Chemical Society in several formats. [Pg.772]

Vol. 2 is a reprint of the author s A select bibliography of chemistry, 1492-1897. Section VIII.—Academic dissertations, published by the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, 1901 as v. 41, article 3 of the Smithsonian miscellaneous collections and also numbered "1253."... [Pg.497]

In 1730 or before, Georg Brandt prepared a dark blue pigment from an ore found at the Skila copper works (Riddarhytta) in Westmanland (39). Specimens of this fargcobalt are still preserved in the Cederbaum collection at Oskarshamn. Since the first accurate description of metallic cobalt is to be found in Brandt s dissertation on the half-metals in the Acta Literaria et Scientiarum, Sveciae for 1735, it has frequently been stated that cobalt was discovered in that year. Nils Zenz6n has shown, however, that this issue of die Acta was not published until 1739 and that the portion of Brandt s Diarium Chymicum which records his researches fiom the latter part of 1737 to the end of 1738 is merely a Swedish edition of the Dissertatio de semi-metallis. ... [Pg.157]

Although the only copy of Rutherford s thesis which Sir William Ramsay was able to find is in the British Museum, Dr, Leonard Dobbin found a copy of it in the Edinburgh University Library and has published Crum Biown s English translation of it in the Journal of Chemical Education (40). Although Ramsay stated in the first edition of The Gases of the Atmosphere that this dissertation "precedes Priestley s and Scheele s writings by a year or two, he collected this in the second edition to read ... [Pg.240]

The different maxima in Fig. 2.1.2.1 can be explained by the experimental conditions, under which every spectrum consisted of 32 scans which were collected over approximately 12 s. For fast reactions the conversion during this period is averaged in the initial intensity. For details, see N. Hermanns, Dissertation, RWTH Aachen University,... [Pg.194]

Finally, I should mention a word about filing technical papers. It is tempting to keep a file of papers by subject, and this is satisfactory for collections of 100 to 200 papers, but beyond that a more systematic method is necessary. Ben Wylie, my dissertation advisor, filed his papers by unique serial number and uses an ingenious system of cross-referenced index cards for retrieving papers by author, title, or subject. I ve adopted the same serial-number system, but I use a computer database to cross reference the file records. I use that database online to help locate a needed reference at a moment s notice. [Pg.48]

The idea is expressed in J. T. Eller, Seconde dissertation sur les elemens , Memoires de lAcademie RoyaldesSciencesetBellesLettres, [Berlin], 2 (1746),pp. 25-48, on 43-4. This is held at Glasgow University Library Special Collections, but that copy was acquired as part of the Hunterian Collection in the early nineteenth century. If Witt was able to consult Eller s work while at Glasgow then it would probably have been in the library of an individual whom he knew, such as Black or Anderson. [Pg.199]

Until the end of 2009, the printed edition of Chemical Abstracts was pnblished weekly. The abstracts part of CA categorises the chemical literature into six basic types of entries (1) serial publications, (2) proceedings and edited collections, (3) technical reports, (4) dissertations, (5) new book and audio-visnal materials annonncements, and (6) patent docnments. The abstracts are classified in... [Pg.2]

If one tries to get a dissertation issued by an American university during the period prior to 1947, one may be able to trace it through use of Special Library Resources (15) which surveys collections of dissertations in research libraries in the United States and Canada. [Pg.118]

There is no international depository of dissertations where copies can be obtained, although one has been proposed many times and few countries have a national center— to the best of the author s knowledge, only France and Germany at the Biblioth ue Nationale and the University of Berlin. What happened to the collection at the University of Berlin during World War II is still undetermined. [Pg.52]

The nearest thing to an international collection of dissertations is at the Biblioth ue Nationale, Paris. It is a very large one which is the result of an exchange system operated by the Ministry of Education of France. This collection, and the ones in the government libraries at Washington, D. C., the British Museum, and Oxford University, England, are the most important of the international but incomplete collections of dissertations... [Pg.52]

The information service of the Swiss National Library, Bern (I), has been open to foreign countries since 1930. It is part of a well organized documentation organization on a national basis, and it can furnish information on dissertations in the Swiss library collections which were not disrupted by two world wars. [Pg.53]

Perhaps the effort to build up one international collection of dissertations in sciences should be renewed. Certainly such a center should use modern methods of recording dissertations and isolating needed information. [Pg.53]

The British Museum, London, England. No printed catalog of its collection of dissertations. [Pg.54]
