With the experimental results accumulated during his stay in Berlin, Garcia Gonzalez prepared two doctoral dissertations, entitled New Crystalline Phosphoric Esters of o-Fructose and Tests on Some Assumed Phases of Alcoholic Fermentation, which he presented in order to receive his doctorates in Chemistry and in Pharmacy, respectively, at the University of Madrid in 1932. Armed with these two degrees, he decided to pursue an academic career in his own country. His early training in a provincial... [Pg.9]

Research done in an academic setting generally results in a formal publication that appears in the primary literature. The research results contained in dissertations may or may not be published separately. Dissertations are catalogued and placed on the shelves of the student s university. Many universities now have electronic catalogues that allow searching from remote sites. Dissertations are also indexed by commercial organizations (see below). [Pg.775]

During his short, but fruitful, academic career, from 1939 to 1975, Emil Hardegger published 123 papers and supervised 46 Doctoral dissertations. The results of some of his later students work were never published, due to the decline of his health, and therefore the titles, authors, and year of doctoral theses he supervised are given in Appendix II. [Pg.4]

Mark took advantage of every opportunity to recover the time lost during the war completing three academic semesters a year he graduated suma cum laude with a Ph.D. in chemistry in July, 1921. His major professor was Wilhelm Schlenk, a highly respected organic chemist. His work, in which his experimental dexterity was especially notable, was both timely and well received. Mark, in his dissertation titled "The Synthesis of Pentaphenylethyl", discussed the presence of the recently proposed free radical. The findings were published in two papers with Schlenk (1, 2). [Pg.13]

Annual listings of academic dissertations accepted and issued by universities have not gainea wide circulation. Indeed, their inclusion in standard indexing and abstracting tools is somewhat of a chance matter. These annual listings are sometimes published in book form, more often in pamphlet form, and sometimes in form of an article in an education journal, a society journal, or a university periodical. Whatever the case may be, the circulation of these lists is most often limited. [Pg.116]

After selectively searching through one, several, or all of the tools listing academic dissertations, and exhausting task in itself, one is faced with the problem of obtaining a copy of individual theses which seem of interest. Unfortunately, no library in the United States has a complete file of dissertations from American colleges and universities. It is known that the library of the institution where the degree was earned holds a copy of the dissertation. Occasionally, one may borrow... [Pg.117]

An international listing and depository would help, to be sure, but the world situation would indicate that there is much to be desired where international cooperation is concerned. Such international cooperation is not too much to hope for, but immediate success in such a venture is not likely. It is apparent that thesis literature seldom appears in bibliographies appended to research reports because academic dissertations are not readily accessible even in this country. The academy of science of an individual country may be able to help in tracing theses. It is well to be aware of the activities of the academies in various countries. In 1956, A. Vucinich, San Jose State Gollege, described the Soviet Academy of Sciences which had been reorganized with the aim of centralizing scientific research (16). [Pg.118]
