Special Library Resources

If one tries to get a dissertation issued by an American university during the period prior to 1947, one may be able to trace it through use of Special Library Resources (15) which surveys collections of dissertations in research libraries in the United States and Canada.

This information may be gleaned from specialized ADR resources, texts, and other tertiary sources, including the FDA-approved product label. However, this information must often be augmented using additional data from secondary sources. At minimum, this should include searches of the bibliographic databases from the National Library of Medicine (Medline and Toxnet) and Excerpta Medica (Embase). 

Sylvia A. Nyana is the Social Sciences librarian at the Pennsylvania State University. She has a BS in sociology from Cornell University and an MLS from the University at Buffalo. Her research interests include improving access and services to academic library resources, and a special research interest in the provision of information/knowledge to oral cultures. She has published in peer-reviewed articles and presented papers and conducted workshops at professional conferences. 

The Division of Specialized Information Services (SIS), National Library of Medicine (NLM), creates information resources and services in toxicology, environmental health, chemistry, and HIV/AIDS (SIS 2007). 

Several chalcone-based libraries (see Fig. 4.11, section 4.2.2) were combined to give a total of over 74,000 discretes (82) and, while no mention of time and resources required was made in the paper, the significant effort required to develop the automated equipment for the synthesis of medium-large libraries in solution in-house was surely paid back by the potential to continuously produce primary lead-seeking libraries in solution in large quantities. Only a few specialized companies may invest so heavily in combinatorial automation, but any interested party can access these companies to contract a library synthesis starting from a proprietary chemistry of interest.

Universities and colleges have them, cities and municipalities have them, many associations have them, even some corporations have them. Libraries serve as a collection point for books, magazines, journals, newspapers, films, directories, encyclopedias, reference books, art, and other expressions of communication. Obviously, not all libraries have the same focus, and the degree of specialization is typically a matter of funding and charter. Many corporate libraries purchase books that feature their own industry and those industry segments that the company serves, subscribe to magazines and newsletters that serve the same purpose, purchase helpful resources and reference publications, and serve as a central distribution point and collection agency for company papers. Even some departments within a company may have their own distinct library for the edification of members of that department.
