Ocean Disposal. Disposal of raw or treated sludge by barging to sea was practiced for many years by some coastal cities, but today is highly controversial, and it appears that this method will be no longer economically feasible. Federal regulations require that sludge be taken to disposal sites about 160 km from the coast, whereas formerly, disposal sites were permitted within 20 km offshore. Transportation costs are expected to be so high that ocean disposal will be discontinued. [Pg.285]

Disposal The final func tional element in the sohd-waste-management system is disposal. Disposal is the ultimate fate of all solid wastes, whether they are wastes collected and transported direc tly to a landfQl site, semisolid wastes (sludge) from industrial treatment plants and air-pollution-control devices, incinerator residue, compost, or other substances from various solid-waste processing plants that are of no further use. [Pg.2230]

Treatment facilities have to send similar notifications along with the shipment of treated wastes to disposal facilities. A certification normally accompanies this notification stating that the waste meets its treatment standards and may be land disposed. Disposal facilities are the final link in the waste management chain. As a result, they have to test the waste residue that they receive to ensure that it meets the treatment standards. [Pg.456]

Most ground-water hydrologists would prefer to speak in terms of waste isolation, emplacing waste in a repository, or waste dispersion, rather than disposal. Disposal, of course, not only implies that no attempt will be made to retrieve the material but it also implies future neglect. Isolation as, for example. [Pg.37]

The disposal of hazardous waste solutions, such as cyanide solutions, used in the electroplating industry has alwsys been a technical and economic problem. Regulations continne to become more stringent as to where and how long this waste is stored, as well as the methods of storage and disposal. Disposal costs continue to increase. Is there a solntion to this problem ... [Pg.270]

By regulation, produced water must be treated (i r, passed through a skimmer tank, cualcscer or flotation unit) prior to disposal. Disposal piles are permitted to collect treated produced water, treated sand, liquids from drip pans and deck drains and as a final trap for hydrocarbon liquid in event of equipment upsets. [Pg.174]

A variation of the Bead Beater is the freezer mill, which uses small magnetic bars rather than beads to pulverize the sample. Cooling is provided by immersing the sample chambers in a liquid nitrogen bath. The freezer mill is intended for larger samples (>500 mg) but may be customized for smaller samples. Both the freezer mill and the Bead Beater require that the sample be placed in secondary containers, which may or may not be disposable. Disposable secondary containers offer the very attractive advantage of reduced time and effort for cleaning. [Pg.107]

Disposal. Disposal is best done by reducing the dichromate to the insoluble chromium hydroxide with a sodium thiosulfate solution. The process for neutralizing 100 mL of chromate solution is as follows ... [Pg.244]

One option is CO2 disposal (disposal in ocean, injection in aquifers, confination in depleted gas or oil wells, injection for enhanced oil recovery). This is now done in Norway (Sleipner gas field) where 2740 t of CO2 per day are removed from natural gas. This CO2 is then compressed and injected into a water-filled sandstone reservoir (deep aquifer) [2]. [Pg.541]

Disposal Excess acetylene should be returned to the vendor for disposal disposal should not be attempted in the laboratory. Excess acetylene should be vented from reaction flasks, tubing, etc., rather than scrubbed with strong base to avoid the formation of acetylides. For more information on disposal procedures, see Chapter 7 of this volume. [Pg.247]
