Therefore, inhibition of anandamide amidohydrolase to increase the accumulation of anandamide at its sites of action is desirable as a potential therapeutic approach for the treatment or prevention of disorders such as mental diseases, inflammation and pain, including treatment or prevention of schizophrenia, mood disorders, anorexia, multiple sclerosis, spasticity and glaucoma. Traditional Medicine. American Indian groups used root of various Yucca spp. in salves or poultices for sores, skin diseases, inflammations, and to stop bleeding in steam baths for sprains and broken limbs as hair wash for dandruff and baldness (foster and duke). [Pg.634]

Histidine Essential fatty acids Omega 6 (a)6 or n-6) 28 1-4 % of total calories 8-12 Absolutely required. Enter cell membranes and affect many biochemical processes. The C20 acids are also converted to eicosanoids, signaling molecules that include prostaglandins and leukotrienes. Essential fatty acids protect against cardiovascular disease, disease, inflammation, and autoimmune reactions. [Pg.209]

Dental riases, as discussed here, do not iaclude gargles and other liquids that are iadicated for inflammation and diseases of the throat and are unrelated to dental plaque. [Pg.503]

The wide range of inflammation-related factors that adipocytes secrete is linked to the inflammatory response that the tissue exhibits in obesity [1]. Obesity in general, like an increasing number of other diseases, is characterised by a state of mild chronic inflammation, and adipose tissue plays a central role in this. The production of most inflammation-related adipokines increases markedly in obesity and there is an elevated circulating level of a number of these factors as well as of other inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein (CRP). The increased production of inflammatory adipokines (and decreased production of adiponectin with its anti-inflammatory action) in the obese is considered to play a critical role in the development of the obesity-associated pathologies, particularly type 2 diabetes and the metabolic syndrome [1]. [Pg.39]

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease. Therefore steroids represent the most important and most frequently used medication. Already after the fust treatment, steroids reduce cellular infiltration, inflammation, and the LAR, whereas changes in the EAR require prolonged treatment to lower the existent IgE levels. The mechanisms of steroid actions are complex and only incompletely understood. Besides their general antiinflammatory properties (see chapter glucocorticoids), the reduction of IL-4 and IL-5 production from T-lymphocytes is particularly important for asthma therapy. The introduction of inhaled steroids, which have dramatically limited side effects of steroids, is considered one of the most important advancements in asthma therapy. Inhaled steroids (beclomethasone, budesonide, fluticasone, triamcinolone, momethasone) are used in mild, moderate, and partially also in severe asthma oral steroids are used only in severe asthma and the treatment of status asthmaticus. Minor side effects of most inhaled steroids are hoarseness and candidasis, which are avoided by the prodrug steroid ciclesonide. [Pg.289]

Multiple scelerosis is an autoimmune disease mediated by T and B lymphocytes and macrophages. This is characterized by extensive inflammation and demyelination of the myelin sheath that surrounds the nerve fiber. The death of the nerve fiber results in a variety of symptoms that can lead to impairment of movement, paralysis, and death. [Pg.794]

Asthma is a reversible obstructive disease of the lower airway. With asthma there is increasing airway obstruction caused by bronchospasm and bronchoconstriction, inflammation and edema of the lining of the bronchioles, and the production of thick mucus that can plug the airway (see Pig. 37-1). There are three types of asthma ... [Pg.333]

Other disorders of the lower respiratory tract include emphysema (lung disorder in which the terminal bronchioles or alveoli become enlarged and plugged with mucus) and chronic bronchitis (chronic inflammation and possibly infection of die bronchi). Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is die name given collectively to emphysema and chronic bronchitis because die obstruction to die airflow is present most of the time. Asdima diat is persistent and present for most of die time may also be referred to as COPD. [Pg.333]

The ghicocorticoids are used as replacement therapy for adrenocortical insufficiency, to treat allergic reactions, collagen diseases (eg, systemic lupus erythematosus), dermatologic conditions, rheumatic disorders, shock, and other conditions (see Display 50-1). The anti-inflammatory activity of these hormones make them valuable as anti-inflammatories and as immunosuppressants to suppress inflammation and modify the immune response... [Pg.522]
