Basic discovery research

Subsequently, basic scientific research made great contributions to our nation s economic strength and its security. Some wonderful examples are described in a series of publications called Beyond Discovery The Path from Research to Human Benefit produced by the National Academies. Each brochnre chronicles some discovery in basic science and how it has had applications beyond what anybody could have imagined. Often as a side benefit, many new products emerged from federal government support (for example, communications satellites) and a series of new discoveries was made. [Pg.73]

Basic Research Attempts to discover compounds, materials, processes or other items that may be largely or entirely new and/or unique. Basic research may start with a theoretical concept that has yet to be proven. The goal is to create discoveries that can be moved along to applied research. Basic research is sometimes referred to as blue sky research. [Pg.13]

In the course of discovery research, reexamination of the benzyne chemistry led to an easily and safely operated benzyne reaction (Scheme 4).38 Solvent was found to affect the rate of halogen-metal exchange processes and the basicity of RLi reagents toward cyclopentadiene, a compound with a low pKa ( 14). Noncoordinating solvents... [Pg.235]

In writing this review I had in mind the need to demonstrate how the rational approach to pesticide discovery could be facilitated by recent discoveries in basic research. Although I am unable at this time to offer chemical structures for industrial exploitation I am confident that there is much to be gained commercially by considering non-competitive antagonists of glutamate receptors as lead structures. [Pg.314]

This paradigm—among many exciting discoveries in basic biomedical research— deserves special attention. We compiled these sources because of their interesting evolving views of the personal and establishment ecosystem dynamics around Crick and Watson and their discovery of the DNA double helix. [Pg.542]

There is no paradox here. The results of most basic research are, by their nature, unforeseeable and often unownable. Eventually, such new knowledge inspires inventions and applications, leading to new products. But the chain is usually long and complex, which is why the discoveries in basic papers are so cited in patents, yet usually with the direct financial benefits accruing to subsequent development. [Pg.7]

Medicinal chemistry s roots, heyday, identity crisis, and key role in today s drug discovery process basic versus applied research and the importance of interdisciplinary efforts. [Pg.548]

The history of alkaline fuel cells (AFCs) is a story of discoveries in basic science posing a challenge to applied research and technology development, a story of 100 years of experiments and false starts that finally led to the first practical fuel cell in the 1930s [1]. [Pg.97]

Modem electronic devices build on a long history of invention, discovery, and basic scientific research. The most critical devices are the control circuit elements — the diode and the switching devices. The latter began as triode vacuum tubes and are now generally transistors. Diodes pass current easily in only one direction. The original diode was invented in 1905 by J. Ambrose Flemming based on observations made in the laboratories of Edison Electric. This diode vacuum tube contained a hot filament, which emits electrons, and a metallic plate collector. Electrons flow only from filament to collector. The following year Lee DeForest created the triode vacuum tube and the electronic revolution was launched. [Pg.2]

The resulting discoveries may provide a broad range of solutions or products. For example, invention may result from basic research and development efforts directed toward products which ate essential to basic commercial efforts. Alternatively, invention may result in products or appHcations which add value to basic commercial products that ate already in existence. Inventions may also be used to assist an individual or company in commercial efforts toward developing a defensive posture in any given marketplace. When patented, appHcations may also provide an extended opportunity to Hcense or market the patent without the actual production of a product by the inventor. [Pg.26]
