Disabled people

It is a requirement of the Building Regulations 1985, Schedule 2, to provide facilities for disabled people. Where provision within industrial buildings for elderly persons are required, reference should be made to the DSS. Consideration should also be given to providing water at lower temperatures to appliances exclusively for used by elderly and/or disabled persons. [Pg.59]

Considered together these problems disable people, diminish their productivity and make their lives extremely stressful. Worse still, the outlook for improvement, given the continued rapid growth in the world population, is bleak. [Pg.310]

The most welcome technical achievements in life science are the ones that enhance well-being or restore impaired or lost biological functions. Rehabilitation engineering is a research field that has devoted its full spectrum of efforts to compensate for malfunctions and disorders in human biological systems. This includes the development of devices for the rehabilitation of neural disorders which are termed neural prostheses. Neural prostheses directly interface with the central and peripheral nervous system. The most commonly known neural prosthesis is the cardiac pacemaker, which has existed for more than 30 years. A variety of other lesser known devices have been developed to partially restore neural functions in disabled people. [Pg.132]

Address psychological or learned helplessness early in the therapy, especially with very disturbed or emotionally disabled people. [Pg.454]

In discussing the postulated murder of the Jews, the historians of the status quo identify the technical and organizational origins of this mass murder as to be found in the program of euthanasia which was enforced as of the beginning of the war - the killing of so-called life not worthy of life , in other words, mentally and/or physically severely disabled people. The reason for this assumption is the considerable overlap, i.e., continuity of staff in both areas.88 However, it seems to me a very dubious practice to attempt to construe this continuity as evidence for the mass murder, since it may very well mean only that the leadership had wished to retain staff which had previously proven loyal in one socially extremely controversial operation, for a subsequent, no less controversial purpose. And whether this controversial purpose was the resettlement, ghettoization, or mass murder of the Jews, is still an open question. [Pg.31]

They are designed in such a way that they can be used by all sections of the population, including children, older people, pregnant women, and physically and mentally disabled people. [Pg.188]

Other Benefits There are other cash benefits paid to help with the mobility or care costs of disability, a Social Fund for emergency payments, assistance with prescription and dental charges and, for children, school meals. Certain groups, such as the carers of disabled people, may be entitled to a specific cash benefit. [Pg.302]

Between 1997 and 2001 the Government introduced a succession of other New Deal employment programmes aimed at lone parents, disabled people, unemployed people aged over 50, and partners. Participation in these programmes is voluntary. [Pg.317]

These Regulations cover a wide range of basic health, safety and welfare issues and apply to most workplaces. They aim to ensure that workplaces meet the health, safety and welfare needs of all members of the workforce, including people with disabilities. Where necessary, parts of the workplace, including in particular doors, passageways, stairs, showers, wash basins, lavatories and workstations, should be made accessible for disabled people. [Pg.11]

Robots in their essence have the purpose to replace human labor, not only in industrial applicatiOTis but also in other human activities. There are many applicaticHis connected to robotics, as for example in medicine, rescue operations, research, aiding the disabled people, etc. In order to fulfill the requirements of everyday life, robotic systems are inevitably becoming more and more sophisticated. The level of complexity demands novel or different research perspectives to be considered. [Pg.109]
