Assisting disabled people to escape

There is no specific legislation that requires special arrangements for disabled people in the event of fire. However, the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (DDA) [Pg.258]

Ml Access and use of existing buildings Reasonable provision must be made for disabled people to access and use the building and its facilities Does not apply to e Domestic dwellings or e Parts of buildings used only for maintenance [Pg.259]

M2 Access to extensions to buildings (other than dwellings) Suitable independent access must be provided where reasonably practical Does not apply where suitable access to the extension is provided through the building that is extended [Pg.259]

The specific requirements for access and use of buildings by disabled people is detailed in Part M of Schedule 1 to the Building Regulations 2000. [Pg.259]

The Disability Discrimination Act 1995 requires employers to make reasonable adjustments to their premises to ensure that no employee is at a disadvantage. This includes ensuring that disabled people can leave the premises safely in the event of fire. [Pg.259]
