Disability, 58—60 determination

Selegiline is a relatively selective and irreversible inhibitor of monoamine oxidase type B, which has been used in the treatment of Parkinson s disease. It was originally suggested that selegiline may be neuroprotective. However, in a prospective double-blind study no such action was seen (1). On the other hand, selegiline does delay the start of disability, determined by the need for levodopa and progression of parkinsonian signs and symptoms (2). [Pg.3117]

Chronic hyperkeratotic dermatitis is chiefly encountered in middle-aged or elderly men. It may be a manifestation of psoriasis (Menne and Bachman 1979). However, a 10-year review of 32 cases by Hersle and Mobacken (1982) did not support this view. Thirteen of their patients had been engaged in hard manual work. They proposed a clinically real entity of hyperkeratotic hand eczema. Wilkinson (1985) suggested that friction and pressure play a determining role in this condition. The condition is severe and accounted for 2.5% of all applications for permanent disability determined in a Danish study (Menne and Bachman 1979). Hyperkeratotic dermatitis of the palms was reviewed recently by Menne (1994), and he accepted this disease as an own entity, independent of psoriasis and of mechanical irritation. [Pg.158]

The next step is to develop a method to determine the overall reUabiUty and failure probabiUty for systems constmcted of a variety of individual components. This requires an understanding of how components are linked. Components are linked either in series or in parallel. For series linkages, overall failure results from the failure of any of the components. For parallel linkages, all of the components must fad. An example of a series linkage is an automobde. The car is disabled if a flat occurs in any one of the four tires. This situation is linked in parallel to the spare tire. The car is completely disabled oidy if a flat occurs and the spare tire is flat. [Pg.476]

To determine which jobs you should analyze first, review your injury and illness reports such as the OSHA 200 log, your medical case histories, your first-aid cases, and workers compensation claims. First, you should conduct a JHA for jobs with the highest rates of disabling injuries and illnesses. Do not forget jobs in which you have had close calls or near hits. You should give these incidents a high priority. Analyses of new jobs and jobs in which changes have been made in processes and procedures should be the next priority. [Pg.44]

The responses to these questions can be used to determine the number of elevators required, the size of the car, the door arrangement and the speed of car travel. Other major considerations should be the location of elevators within the building and accessibility for disabled users. [Pg.60]

One study used quality-adjusted life years to capture the range of health-related dimensions that may affect the quality of life of patients. This measure also provides an estimate of the value or preferences for changes in health status (Neumann et al, 1999). The study used the Health Utility Index Mark II in a sample of patients and carers, which is a generic measure of the value of health-related quality of life. However, it is clear that further research is needed to explore (a) the key determinants or dimensions of quality of life that are important to people with dementia and their carers (b) whether existing instmments to measure and value health-related quality of life are able to detect differences in quality of life that are important to people with cognitive disability and their carers and (c) whether the assessment and... [Pg.85]

Acute stroke is considered to be an acute medical emergency. Identification of the time and manner of stroke onset is an important determinant in treatment. The time the patient was last without symptoms is used as the time of stroke onset. Since patients typically do not experience pain, determining the onset time can be difficult. It is also important to document risk factors and previous functional status of the patient to assess current disability due to the stroke. [Pg.166]

The developments in the treatment of RA are tempered by the lack of evidence describing the long-term safety and efficacy of the BRMs. In addition, the cost associated with the medications can be a deterrent to use. Long-term data are needed to determine if patients receiving BRM therapy early in the course of disease have reduced disease activity, reduced joint deformities and disability, improved quality of life, and continued function as productive members of society. Cost analyses of long-term data may indicate that the increased expenses associated with BRMs are offset by the costs avoided for the treatment of advanced RA. [Pg.875]

The Ninth Circuit ruled that Raytheon s blanket policy did not shield it from the obligation not to discriminate against former drug abusers. The company was obligated to take Hernandez s protected status (as disabled) into account and could not deliberately avoid learning about that status. The court ruled that the case should go to trial to determine whether Hernandez had been discriminated against. Raytheon appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court. [Pg.76]
