Director, compensation

Directors should be compensated in proportion to the time they are required to serve in meetings on company business. This is often accomplished by paying a retainer plus a fee for each meeting attended the board chair and committee chairs often receive an additional retainer. In some small companies, director compensation is paid in the form of stock options, thereby avoiding direct cash outlays. 

As witli tlie nematic phase, a chiral version of tlie smectic C phase has been observed and is denoted SniC. In tliis phase, tlie director rotates around tlie cone generated by tlie tilt angle [9,32]. This phase is helielectric, i.e. tlie spontaneous polarization induced by dipolar ordering (transverse to tlie molecular long axis) rotates around a helix. However, if tlie helix is unwound by external forces such as surface interactions, or electric fields or by compensating tlie pitch in a mixture, so tliat it becomes infinite, tlie phase becomes ferroelectric. This is tlie basis of ferroelectric liquid crystal displays (section C2.2.4.4). If tliere is an alternation in polarization direction between layers tlie phase can be ferrielectric or antiferroelectric. A smectic A phase foniied by chiral molecules is sometimes denoted SiiiA, altliough, due to the untilted symmetry of tlie phase, it is not itself chiral. This notation is strictly incorrect because tlie asterisk should be used to indicate the chirality of tlie phase and not tliat of tlie constituent molecules.

In order to produce black-and-white as well as full-colour STN-LCDs, the monochrome interference colours must first be eliminated. This was achieved initially by using two STN-LCDs in a combined double-layer (DSTN) LCD configuration. This involves the use of another non-addressed, passive STN cell in addition to the active display STN-LCD. However, the non-addressed cell has an opposite sense of twist of the nematic director in the cell to that of the addressed STN-LCD. The second STN-LCD, which is identical to the first, but not addressed at all, acts as a retardation compensation layer. The use of an identical second STN-LCD in combination with the active STN-LCD has the advantage that both displays exhibit exactly the same temperature dependence of the birefringence with the same dispersion, assuming that both cells are filled with the same liquid crystal mixture. The second STN-LCD is not addressed and, therefore, there is no increase in power consumption. However, the use of two identical STN-LCDs instead of only one clearly increases the cost and weight of the final product significantly.

In addition, responsible parties—from the shop floor to the board of directors—should be rewarded for good process safety performance, and there should be consequences for poor performance. Linking process safety results with personnel compensation must be done carefully to avoid counterproductive incentives. The compensation systems must not discourage reporting unsafe conditions or other gaming of the metrics system. 

The key to experimental narrative is the desire to avoid conventional narrative. Conventional narrative is essentially a character-driven or plot-driven story with a beginning, middle, and end. In conventional narrative, the main character may or may not achieve his or her goal, but the drive to achieve the goal carries us through the story to a resolution. A nonlinear story may eschew a single main character, or a plot, or a resolution, or all of the above. In the experimental narrative, the energy of the story comes from the style the writer-director chooses to use to compensate the audience for the loss of linear direction through the story. Many experimental narratives have no plot some have no defined character. Consequently, the conventional dramatic tools—conflict, polarities—are less at play. In experimental narrative, form or style is as important as, and often more important than, content. Thus, a nonlinear form is more able to capture the essence of experimental narrative than is the usual set of dramatic tools deployed in more conventional or linear narrative. 

Both aspects may be operative, as they are in the case of anisole for instance, but they need not both be present in the director. A director which does not coordinate to lithium must acidify the positions next to it considerably if it is to be effective. We shall see that fluorine is such a substituent. Conversely, if the hydrogen atoms are not activated in any way by the director then it must compensate by being a very effective donor to lithium.
