Herbicides. An array of herbicides are registered for use in aquatic sites, but copper sulfate and diquat dibromide are of additional interest because they also have therapeutic properties (9,10). Copper sulfate has been used to control bacteria, fungi, and certain parasites, including Jchthjophthirius (ich). Diquat dibromide can control columnaris disease, but it also exhibits fungicidal properties (9,10). EPA recentiy proposed to limit the amount of diquat dibromide, endothaH, glyphosate, and simazine that can be present in drinking water therefore, the use of these compounds may be reduced if they cannot be removed from the effluent. [Pg.322]

Paraquat (1,1 dimethyl, 4,4 bipyridyl) is a nonselective contact herbicide. It is used almost exclusively as a dichloride salt and usually is formulated to contain surfactants. Both its herbicidal and toxicological properties are dependent on the ability of the parent cation to undergo a single electron addition, to form a free radical that reacts with molecular oxygen to reform the cation and concomitantly produce a superoxide anion. This oxygen radical may directly or indirectly cause cell death. Diquat, l,T-ethylene-2,2 -dipyridylium, is a charged quaternary ammonium compound often found as the dibromide salt. The structure of diquat dibromide and that of the closely related herbicide paraquat can be seen in Fig. 4.5. [Pg.77]

The one-electron reduction of diquaternary salts of 2,2 -bipyridine has attracted much attention. When an aqueous solution of diquat dibromide (75) is treated with a one-electron reducing agent, such as zinc dust, the solution acquires an intense green color. This is due to the formation of the stable radical cation 87. The one-electron transfer is completely reversed by air. In theory the radical cation 87 can take up another electron to form the neutral species 88. The stability of the radical cation 87 is due to the ability of the odd electron to be located at any of the nuclear positions because of the near coplanarity of the two pyridine rings. The potential 0 of the first one-electron transfer occurs at — 0.35 V in aqueous solution... [Pg.341]

Uses Technical diquat dibromide is more than 95% pure and forms white to yellow crystals. It is used to desiccate potato vines and seed crops, to control flowering of sugarcane, and for industrial and aquatic weed control. It is not residual (i.e., it does not leave any trace of herbicide on or in plants, soil, or water). Diquat dibromide is a nonselective, quick-acting herbicide and plant growth regulator, causing injury only to the parts of the plant to which it is applied. Diquat dibromide is referred to as a desiccant because it causes a leaf or entire plant to dry out quickly. [Pg.170]
