Dictionaries and Encyclopedias

If you spend time online, you should become familiar with aU the dictionary help available on the Internet. Use the online resources by typing the word in the search box, or if you want to be more specific, type in definition + the word you want. You ll be offered definitions of that word from several dictionaries and encyclopedias. Typically, along with the definition, you ll find lists of or links to antonyms and synonyms from a thesaurus.

Encyclopedias and dictionaries provide excellent basic definitions and descriptions of terms in agricultural and food engineering. The following dictionaries and encyclopedias are good sources, but none are comprehensive. One may need to consult several dictionaries to locate the definition for a specific term because all define a very different set of terms. The encyclopedias also are varied and provide different types of information. Although not listed here, older resources also are valuable in providing historical terminology and descriptions.

If an online collection is not within the budget, then selected hard copy or online editions should be purchased. Using the reviews in Choice or SciTech Book News, or conducting a search in WorldCat can be helpful to determine recent and popular titles in particnlar areas. Of these sources, Kirk-Othmer s Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology is particularly recommended for questions on chemistry and on end uses. For information on properties and on toxicity and handling hazards, Patty s Industrial Hygiene, Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), and the Aldrich catalog are very nseful. Questions on industrial chemistry should be directed to Ullman s Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry, and the texts by Chenier, Heaton, and White. Hawley s Condensed Chemical Dictionary is valuable as a source for dehnitions of the terms (language) of chemistry. 

Fortunately for a poor, would-be chemist like Leblanc, France s aristocratic passion for the physical sciences crossed economic, social, and political borders.
