Development malignancy

Tumors are either benign or malignant.4 Benign tumors often are encapsulated, localized, and indolent they seldom metastasize and they recur rarely once removed. Histologically, the cells resemble the cells from which they developed. Malignant tumors are invasive and spread to other locations, even if the primary tumor is removed. The cells no longer perform their usual functions, and their cellular architecture changes. Anaplasia is defined as the loss of structure and function. [Pg.1280]

In rats, AAF had no demonstrable acute toxicity in quantities up to 50mg/kg subcutaneously and 1 g/% gastrically however, AAF was very toxic when administered in the diet." Incorporation of 0.031% AAF or higher for at least 95 days led to epithelial hyperplasia of the bladder, renal pelvis, liver, pancreas, and lung 19 of 39 rats developed malignant tumors, 16 of which were carcinomas." ... [Pg.21]

Of 41 female Swiss mice that survived for 36 weeks after a single subcutaneous injection of 0.6 mg, 5 developed malignant lymphomas during the next 15 weeks the significance of the smdy cannot be evaluated, because this mmor occurs spontaneously with a variable incidence in the mouse strain used. °... [Pg.660]

Carcinogenesis As a result of depressed cell-mediated immunity, organ transplant patients have an increased risk of developing malignancies. [Pg.1979]

A Michigan daily farmer, who had a history of health complaints after 1976, developed malignant cancer of the esophageal and stomach wall in 1986 the man subsequently died in 1988 (Sherman 1991). Samples of adipose tissue, collected in 1976 and 1987, revealed PBB concentrations of 0.83 and 0.85 ppm, respectively. Also detected in the fat tissue collected in 1987 were polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) at 3.57 ppm and chlordane residues at concentrations ranging from 0.018 to 0.039 ppm. [Pg.174]

Caution should be exercised in considering Remicade treatment in patients with a history of malignancy or in continuing treatment in patients who develop malignancy while receiving Remicade... [Pg.428]

A 28-year-old man, who developed malignant hyperthermia after anesthesia induced with isoflurane and maintained with sevoflurane, died 4 days later, despite cooling and intravenous dantrolene (49). [Pg.3128]

K. M., a 41-year-old, white female, developed malignant sarcoidosis. Sarcoid is a disease of unknown origin and today remains about as mysterious as it was 100 years ago. The word sarcoid is from the Greek, meaning... [Pg.106]

Rats administered NDMA in the drinking water at doses of 0.3 mg/kg/day, 5 days/week for 30 weeks, developed malignant liver tumors (Keefer et al. 1973, Lijinsky and Reuber 1984). Lijinsky et al. (1987)... [Pg.48]

The immunosuppressive effect of cytotoxic agents, with or without the concurrent use of steroids, can result in serious infections, which are the primary cause of death in patients with minimal-change nephropathy. Other toxicities associated with cyclophosphamide include gonadal fibrosis, which results in sterility, hemorrhagic cystitis, alopecia, and a potential to develop malignancy in those on long-term treatment. Patients on chronic steroid therapy often develop growth retardation, osteoporosis, obesity, and cataracts. ... [Pg.902]

Magee and Bames (2441a) reported that almost all rats fed a diet containing 50 ppm of NDMA developed malignant hver tumors within less than a year. [Pg.693]

In addition, mice carrying hnked germline mutations in Nfl and p53 develop malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs), which supports a cooperative and causal role for p53 mutations in MPNST development. [Pg.163]

In rats subcutaneously administered 10 mg daily of a freeze-dried extract of witch hazel leaf weekly for 78 weeks, 3 of 15 male rats and 0 of 15 female rats developed malignant mesenchymoma. This rate of tumors was not considered significant (Kapadia et al. 1978). [Pg.432]
