The function of offshore production facilities are very much the same as those described for land operations. An offshore production platform is rather like a gathering station hydrocarbons have to be collected, processed and evacuated for further treatment or storage. Continuous clarifiers generally are employed with dilute suspensions, principally industrial process streams and domestic municipal wastes, and their primary purpose is to produce a relatively clear overflow. They are basically identical to thickeners in design and layout except that they employ a mechanism of hghter construction and a drive head with a lower torque capability. These differences are permitted in clarification applications because the thickened pulp produced is smaller in volume and appreciably lower in suspended solids concentration, owing in part to the large percentage of relatively fine (smaller than 10 Im) solids. The installed cost of a clarifier, therefore, is approximately 5 to 10 percent less than that of a thickener of equal tank size, as given in Fig. 18-94. 

The design and layout of the physical facihties that make up the processing-plant flow sheet are an important aspect in the implementation and successful operation of such systems. Important factors that must be considered in the design and layout of such systems include (1) process performance efficiency, (2) rehability and flexibihty, (3) ease and economy of operation, (4) aesthetics, and (5) environmental controls.

Apparatus construction companies specializing in these reactors have developed a detailed and comprehensive know-how as regards flow control of the heat transfer medium [28, 29], This concerns the uniform supply and removal of the heat transfer medium, which generally takes place vial external annular channels, as well as the flow control within the reactor.
