In a three-year research and development programme carried out at the University of Bolton, with financial support and collaboration fiom the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), UK and five medical textile companies, a number of itmovative instruments and products were developed and characterised. To stimulate the growth of free trade in the EU a number of directives have been adopted that lay down safety requirements for goods and equipment. The drawing up of regulations to incorporate the content of these particular directives into UK laws is carried out by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) under powers contained in the European Communities Act 1972. 

The Club was inaugurated in 1991 under the sponsorship of the UK s Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). Its secretariat is at the Centre for Software Reliability (CSR) in the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, and its Co-ordinator is Felix Redmill of Redmill Consultancy. 

H2NET is guided by a steering committee drawn from industrial groups and university departments. It is currently supported by the UK Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) under contract No. 14034676. 

Both a learned society and a professional body, the Geological Society is recognized by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) as the chartering authority for geoscience, able to award Chartered Geologist status upon appropriately qualified Fellows. The Society has a membership of 8600, of whom about 1500 live outside the UK. 

In 1997, the Swedish government identified Pb as an element it intended to eliminate from products over the following 10 years. The Sweden Environmental Quality Objectives direct that new products, including batteries, introduced in Sweden should be mostly Pb-free by 2020 [18]. In 1991, the UK, in collaboration with GEC, BNR-Europe, Multicore Solders, and ITRI, and supported by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), undertook a project to make an initial assessment of alternative solders for electronic assemblies. That was followed by a European collaboration in 1994 to address issues associated with the implementation of Pb-free soldering technologies as did several large companies in the UK.
