Training demolition

Demolition training which enables Marines to destroy explosive devices in place. 

This manual is not intended to stand completely on its own as a substitute for instruction, nor is it a text on basic demolitions. Its chief value should be to aid an instructor who already has a working knowledge of the subject in his training of action personnel. It also will serve as a refresher and guide to individuals who have been trained in these techniques but whose facility has declined from disuse.

F. Demolition Block, shown in Fig 211, p 159 of Ref 1, consisted of a cast-iron cylinder (414x6 inches or 4%x4% inches) contg blocks of PA. The body was mounted on a stick 21 inches long. The modern blasting cap may be defined as a device intended to initiate by means of a detonating wave a HE, coml or a military demolition chge. If such a device is used as a part of an expl train in a projectile or a bomb, it is called a "Detonator (qv)... 

Since I m quite familiar with the now defunct CSA (see page 81 of THE GUN RUNNER), I know that this reference, too, was irrelevant. Over the years the CSA had several demolitions and weapons experts, trained by the military. They never really needed such manuals. So Ellison bombed a fag church and a pipeline of some sort, as I remember Any of several of his members could have built the bombs without referring to any manual. 

Small bridges can be destroyed with ease and certainty, and craters blown in the road to form tank barriers. These and many other simple demolitions can be carried out after a short but careful course of training. It must be repeated, however, that H.E. must be handled only by trained men and that men should be trained without filler delay. The possibilities of tl weapon in trained hands are uhUmited, but in the haixis of untrained personnel its use is usually disastrous. 

Who The employer is to provide a trained and equipped firefighting organization (fire brigade) as warranted by the project. During demolition or alterations, existing automatic sprinkler installation control valves may only be operated by properly authorized persons. The risks associated with new projects may include use of hazardous substances insufficient product data faulty electrical equipment poor access/egress poor ergonomics noisy equipment poorly guarded machinery imported equipment/materials lack of risk assessment lack of training/awareness on behalf of management, supervision and employees poor environmental control inadequate emergency procedures inadequate maintenance considerations poor construction methods little or no consideration of waste disposal/demolition. 

The preinvasion preparations of the three Marine divisions earmarked for Iwo included work with both the portable and the mechanized flame throwers. For the smaller weapon this preparation consisted mostly of integrating the flame throwers with the assault teams. It was 3d Marine Division policy to have in each of its battalions an assault platoon made up of 6 men from each rifle company and 2 men from the battalion headquarters company. These 20 men, specially trained in the use of flame throwers, rocket launchers, and demolitions, were placed under the immediate control of the battalion commander. A very important requirement for demolition work is the provision of training for all construction workers involved in the work. Specialist training courses are available for those concerned with the management of the total process. The Construction Industry Training Board (CITE) offers a training course entitled A Scheme for the Certification of Competence of Demolition Operatives .
