The cellulose molecule contains three hydroxyl groups which can react and leave the chain backbone intact. These alcohol groups can be esterified with acetic anhydride to form cellulose acetate. Pervaporation has been commercialized for two appHcations. The first and most developed is the separation of water from concentrated alcohol solutions. GFT of Neunkirchen, Germany, the leader in this field, installed their first important plant in 1982. More than 100 plants have been installed by GFT for this appHcation (90). The second appHcation is the separation of small amounts of organic solvents from contaminated water (91). In both of these apphcations, organics are separated from water. This separation is relatively easy, because organic compounds and water, due to their difference in polarity, exhibit distinct membrane permeation properties. Hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC), a nonionic thickening agent, is prepared from alkali cellulose and ethylene oxide in the presence of isopropyl alcohol (46). Aqueous Solution Viscosity. A special solution preparation method is used for one type of measurement of aqueous solution viscosity (96). The appropriate amount of poly(ethylene oxide) resin is dispersed in 125 mL of anhydrous isopropyl alcohol by vigorous stirring. Because the resin is insoluble in anhydrous isopropyl alcohol, a slurry forms and the alcohol wets the resin particles. An appropriate amount of water is added and stirring is slowed to about 100 rpm to avoid shear degradation of the polymer. In Table 4, the nominal resin concentration reported is based on the amount of water present and ignores the isopropyl alcohol. [Pg.343]
